Persons like myself

A young lad who spent his childhood reading and digesting the world atlas

But coming from a council estate and only a single parent to bring them up (my father died when i was 4 YO)

The only possible way I could travel abroad and see these countries and taste the culture was to join the forces no way could I have travelled the world in any other way.

The rest of the job comes with the 'signature on the line'

O not all squaddies are thick - instantly obeying all orders types. Some of us had/have brains and are free thinking individuals who learn from their experiences and form their own opinions

Well that sounds like the sort of anti-dote that warms the cockles of my heart to hear 8) ... but are you of the old-school of soldiering? ... a remnant of the last days of Military service ?

It all depends on the person. Some families take pride in joining the army, particularly when they have a long-line of family war heroes, or great soldiers. However, it's not popular to become a soldier in today's world, many soldiers regret the move and decide to retire early. If you think about it once you sign on, you are property of any government wars/invations, even if you do not agree with them.
