The Tuzla martyrs were remembered this morning at a special ceremony in front of the Martyrs’ Monument in Tuzla village to the north of Famagusta.

The ceremony started with the laying of wreaths at the Tuzla Martyrs’ Monument.

During the ceremony, flags were raised to the national anthem, a minutes’ silence was observed and shot fired in memory of the martyrs, who died while defending the Tuzla village against Greek Cypriot attacks between 1958 and 1963, and in 1974.

The ceremony ended with prayers.

In a written statement, the President of the Society of Martyrs’ Families and the Disabled War Veterans Ertan Ersan said the heroic struggle waged by the Tuzla villagers will always be remembered.

PEDESTRIAN PROJECT IN OLD CITY OF LEFKOSA (NİCOSİA)
A project to reorganize the flow of traffic within the center of Lefkosa and to transform roads into pedestrian walkways will be launched on Monday the 4th of August 2008, the Lefkosa Turkish Municipality has announced.

Brochures informing the public about the pedestrian walkway project carried out in cooperation between the Lefkosa Turkish Municipality and the Prime Minister’s office were handed out today.

The project is an important part of the wider “Asmaalti Development Project” aimed at revamping the heart of the capital.

Speaking to reporters during the campaign, the Mayor of Lefkosa Cemal Bulutoglulari said that they will be meeting and consulting with shop owners in the coming days before starting the project.

He said a large majority of a group of local shopkeepers and residents whom he met earlier at the Chamber of Shopkeepers and Artisans had expressed support for the scheme.

Explaining that the Turkey and the European Union will be financially contributing to the project, Mayor Bullutoglulari said that traffic congestions experienced in the area will be immensely relieved once the project is completed.

Within the framework of the project, the road leading from Sarayonu square to Asmaalti square, the area around the Great Inn and the road leading from Arasta Pedestrian Street to the Besdesten will be converted into pedestrian walkways.

You know for someone that keeps saying "the past is past lets build the future" you've posted or mentioned this about 4 times today. Yet you'd probably react if a GC posted about the remembrance of one of the gc villages that got slaughtered by turks.

"Fortunate" you have a few deaths to "celebrate" so that you can "justifiably" capitalise by having an excuse to "upstage" any misery the GCs may feel at having thousands of their people killed, hundreds of thousands ethnically cleansed from their homes and nearly half the island lost to some Eastern backward expansionist warmongers.

CAKICI AND ANTONIADOU EXPRESS SUPPORT TO THE TWO LEADERS IN CYPRUS.

The Communal Democracy Party (TDP) has launched a series of visits to Greek Cypriot political parties in a bid to seek support for the ongoing talks between the two leaders on the island.
Within the framework of the visits, the leader of the TDP Mehmet Cakici came together with the deputy-leader of the Greek Cypriot United Democrats (EDI) Praxoula Antoniadou.

Speaking after the meeting, the EDI deputy leader said that the aim of the meeting- which came just a day before tomorrow’s leaders’ meeting - was to express support to the two leaders and encourage them towards starting comprehensive negotiations as soon as possible.

She expressed the hope that the two leaders will sign an agreement to bring peace and prosperity to the island.

For his part, the leader of the Communal Democracy Party Mehmet Cakici said that both peoples on the island needed a solution and that time wasted in the process of achieving that goal worked against the interest of both sides.

Expressing his party’s desire for the two leaders to launch comprehensive negotiations, the TDP leader said a solution should be based on bi-zonality, bi-communality and political equality of the two sides.

“We must work very hard. This is an historic process and we must support the two leaders” he added.

Halil, for the million time will you stop this psychologiacal brainwashing.

It is PRESIDENT Christofias and some apparent leader.

We all know you are spreading the propganda but please get your FACTS right. But I suppose working for an illegal regime and going back on your word is standard practice huh?

Remember PRESIDENT Christofias in future.

Which chapter was on Human and Democratic Right violation I wonder, and if already discussed, what did the EU say.??

Perhaps those minor details are left for last to be discussed, just like with Turkey.!!

Find a settlement, and the north will be in the EU overnight, since it is halfway there anyway, with the True Cypriots of the north.!
