The UN Secretary General’s Special Advisor to Cyprus Alexander Downer will arrive in Cyprus on Sunday for talks with the two sides.
The visit will be first to the island by Mr Downer who was recently appointed by the UN as the UN Chief’s Special Adviser.
According to information obtained from the UNFICYP Spokesman Jose Diaz, Mr Downer will be meeting separately with President Mehmet Ali Talat and Greek Cypriot Leader Demetris Christofias on Tuesday, the 29th of July.
He will also be meeting with the UN Special Representative in Cyprus-UNFICYP Chief of Mission Taye-Brook Zerihoun on Monday.
The UN Special Advisor is expected to leave the island on Wednesday.
UBP EXPRESS CONCERN OVER MEETING BETWEEN TALAT AND CHRISTOFIAS
The Leader of the main opposition National Unity Party Tahsin Ertugruloglu has expressed concern over tomorrow’s meeting between President Mehmet Ali Talat and the Greek Cypriot Leader Dimitris Christofias.
In a written statement today, Mr Ertugruloglu described the meeting between the two leaders as the most critical meeting on the Cyprus Problem to be held until today.
‘The meeting will take place under the shadow of Mr Talat’s acceptance of a vital issue; ‘the issue of single sovereignty’, besides single international identity and single citizenship’ Mr Ertugruloglu said.
He also expressed the hope that President Talat will work on to constitute a national consensus before reaching a decision if vital issues are brought to the agenda and he will not make the same mistake he did last time.
AVCI CALLS ON GREEK CYPRIOT SIDE TO CONTRIBUTE TO SOLUTION IN CYPRUS
Deputy Prime Minister-Foreign Minister Turgay Avci has called on the Greek Cypriot Side to put forward an attitude which would contribute to the solution of the Cyprus problem during tomorrow’s meeting.
In a written statement today, Mr Avci complained that some Greek Cypriot officials especially the Greek Cypriot Leader Dimitris Christofias and Foreign Minister Markos Kiprianu are still continuing to make statement which would harm the process on the eve of negotiations between the two leaders.
Explaining that the Mr Christofias has claimed that Turkey is the source of the problems being faced in the way for a solution while he was receiving some foreign ambassadors newly appointed to South Cyprus, Mr Avci stressed that Turkey’s support to the Annan plan which was the most comprehensive solution plan ever is well-known by the whole world.
