PRESIDENT CALLED ON THE GREEK CYPRIOTS TO BE READY TO SHARE SOVEREIGNTY WITH THE TURKISH CYPRIOTS

President Mehmet Ali Talat has said that all contributions to be made within the solution will be benefited in the new process, adding that the objective is to strike a good deal.

President Talat and Greek Cypriot Leader Demetris Christofias launched the new negotiation process yesterday with the aim of bringing about a lasting solution to the Cyprus problem.

In an address to the nation broadcast live by Bayrak Television just hours after the launch of the new process, President Talat said he would be continuing the talks with full responsibility keeping the importance of a solution both for the Turkish Cypriot People and the world peace, in mind.

The President stressed that they wanted to bring a solution to the Cyprus problem and that they would work hard to achieve this objective.

“But a solution should protect the rights and gains of the Turkish Cypriot People. I will work hard in the new process to produce a `good solution plan` that will help us to protect and improve our rights and gains and to put it to a referendum` he noted.

The President also underlined the need to sit at the table with a constructive spirit and to show respect to the rights of the two peoples and said that it’s should be known very well that he didn’t intend to give up the rights of the Turkish Cypriot People.

Pointing out that Turkey will again be the biggest supporter of the Turkish Cypriots in the way to a just and lasting solution, he stated that cooperation and solidarity with Ankara will be continues in the light of this reality.

He noted that necessary measures should be taken to prevent a future solution from bringing the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots to a clashing point.

The President called on the people and civil society organizations to contribute actively to the new process.

In a call to the Greek Cypriot people, President of the Republic said that the Turkish Cypriot people wanted a solution but added that this didn’t mean that the Turkish Cypriots would accept Greek Cypriot rule over them.

Underling the need for the Greek Cypriots to be ready to share sovereignty with the Turkish Cypriot People in order to make Cyprus a common homeland, he called on them to work towards becoming a good example for the rest of the world instead of being afraid of bad examples in the world.

CHRISTOFIAS ‘SOLUTION ISN’T POSSIBLE IN 2008’
Just days after the launch of the new process in Cyprus, the Leader of the Greek Cypriot Administration Demetris Christofias has repeated his well known views on the Cyprus problem, including the issue of guarantees.

Speaking at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs, Christofias claimed that it is time for the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots to get detached from their Motherlands, Turkey and Greece, both of which are guarantor powers according to 1960 agreements.

On implementing a solution, Christofias said that it would be
more difficult to implement the solution than to agree on.

Contrary to President Talat’s position, he expressed the view that the Cyprus problem cannot be solved within the year.

Replying to a question about the property issue, Christofias said that this will be one of the difficult issues during the direct talks with President Talat and said that it will be the second issue on the agenda of the talks, after governance.

Christofias also claimed that most of the Turkish-born TRNC citizens, whom he referred as “settlers”, would leave the island after a settlement.

A REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY WILL BE HELD FOR MARTYRS WHO LOST THEIR LIVES DURING THE STRUGGLE

The 34th anniversary of the liberation of Yesilirmak village, at the westernmost point of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was celebrated with a special ceremony this afternoon.

Before that ceremony, martyrs who fell during the resistance put up against the Greek-Greek Cypriot onslaught in 1974 were remembered at the Martyrdom.

The main ceremony was held in front of the Ataturk Monument where speeches were delivered and poems were read to mark the significance of the day.

The ceremony ended with a parade.

Yesilirmak villagers celebrate the day as the ‘Resistance and Integration Day’, marking the anniversary of the day when the village had integrated into the Turkish Cypriot territory at the end of a struggle waged by Turkish Cypriots fighters; twenty days after the Turkish Peace Operation in 1974.
