news from northern Cyprus .............

NAMI SAYS THE NEW PROCESS WILL BE A DIFFICULT ONE

The Presidential Adviser Ozdil Nami has said that the new negotiation process to be launched tomorrow would be a difficult one, but added that the two sides should determinedly continue the talks.

`We should be ready for all; the leaders may one day leave the talks with a smiling face and another with a sad face, and even we may face with deadlocks` Mr Nami told BRT, adding that the Turkish Cypriot Side would continue its efforts to the end.

Mr Nami – who has long been holding discussions with Yorgos Yakovu- an aide to the Greek Cypriot Leader – said it seems that the Greek Cypriot Side has also got the will to strike a deal.

`But, we will see whether the Greek Cypriot Side really wants a solution or not when the direct talks are launched`, he noted.

Responding to a question on his last meeting with Mr Yakovu when the Greek Cypriot aide left the table after being told that villagers from Pirgo would not be allowed to use the Yesilirmak Gate for ceremonies at Ayios Mamas, Mr Nami said that the move will not turn to a crisis at the talks.

Commenting on Greek Foreign Minister’s statement that a solution plan should be prepared in Cyprus, he said the two sides should try to draw a plan themselves, adding that the United Nations could present a plan to the sides if they fail to do so.

Answering a question on possible effects of the recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia by Russia on the Cyprus issue, he said that the two are separate issues which should be taken up separately.

But, he said that the Greek Cypriot Side should learn lessons from the recognition of two Georgian regions and should stop playing for time.

He noted that the international community would get involved in the Cyprus problem in case of a failure at the talks and that it could bring a solution to the problem itself.

But, he warned that the solution to be found may not be the one desired by the sides, however, he stopped short to say what kind of a step could be taken by the international community.

Responding to another question, Mr Nami said that the chances of finding a solution to the problem are higher than a failure.

Stressing that the Turkish Cypriot Side will sit at the negotiations table with good will, he expressed the hope that a solution would be reached at the talks.

He also noted that the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Cyprus Alexander Downer will be visiting Ankara, Athens, Brussels and London in the coming days for further contacts on the Cyprus issue.

News from the Northern Cyprus.......

SOYER SAYS TURKEY’S GUARANTEE WILL BE MAINTAINED
Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer has said that the Cyprus issue will be back on track with the launch of the new negotiation process.

Pointing out that the new process will be carried out under the aegis of the United Nations after a four year break, the Premier complained that the former Greek Cypriot leader Papadopulos had worked hard to take the Cyprus problem out of the UN framework and to pull it into the European Union.

Mr Soyer told the Anatolian News Agency that the Turkish Cypriot Side together with Turkey had managed to explain to the world that the Greek Cypriot Leader’s policy is not realistic and sustainable.

`The objective is a new partnership state to be formed by politically equal Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot constituent states, which will have a single international identity`, the Prime Minister said, adding that the point to be reached must be based on a vision of both leaders, equality of Turkish Cypriots and bi-zonal structure.

Mr Soyer stressed that Turkey's guarantorship would continue in all circumstances as a reality that can not be debated.

He noted that the solution of the Cyprus problem will contribute positively to Turko-Greek relations and Turkey’s EU membership process.

UBP WARNS TALAT TO PROTECT INTERESTS OF TC PEOPLE
The main opposition National Unity Party has said that President Talat should protect the interests of the Turkish Cypriot people and the state when he sits at the negotiating table tomorrow.

In a statement issued today, the UBP Lefkosa Deputy Irsen Kucuk said that it was important to act wisely when carrying out negotiations so as not to waste the freedom, security and sovereignty achieved by the Turkish Cypriot people at the end of a 50 year struggle.

He said that expected President Talat to remain loyal to his Presidential oath and to protect the interests of the Turkish Cypriot people and state.

Kucuk also said that the UBP will support the President in the negotiations process as long as he remains loyal to his oath.

The UBP deputy said that main reason for the ongoing non-solution of the Cyprus Problem was due to the intentions and attempts by the Greek-Greek Cypriot Duo to take control over the island.

Just 2 things here Halil,

1. There will be no agreement tomorrow as Turkey INSISTS on the Guarantorship. We may as well just withdraw now and not waste any time. It just shows that TPAP was not to blame, it was Turkey with her ridiculous demands.

2. I wouldn't want to be on poor Mr Talats shoes tomorrow, with all the pressure he is now getting from his side. Seems to me he will be buggered if he does and buggered if he doesn't. poor fellow, I have to say i do feel sorry for him.

Guarantorship by Turkey = No Solution, you must know that right??

Pentaman u forgetting that majority of the TC's said yes to Annan plan and in Annan plan there was a guarantorship too .
public demands comes first and also it was in all UN plans at past .

Talat listens what the public wants from him . he was on Kibris genç tv last night .

he was telling what they agreed at first they of their meeting with your leader .

they were declare to world new republic will be bi-zonal ,bi-communal ,politicaly equal and it will be from two consitutial states and they will talk guarentees at their next meetings .

if your sides wants to break talks they can but it is not easy as you are thinking.

If any backward uneducated Anatolian Turkish soldier tries to "guarantee" my safety whilst I am a citizen of one of the highest establishments of Democracy ... I might as well shoot myself ...

Hang on ... maybe that is what Turkey wants ... for all the GCs to shoot themselves in disbelieve at some cavemen that know nothing about Democracy and Human Rights ... supposedly offering us guarantorship in Cyprus-EU ...

What a pathetic, sad joke ....

NEGOTIATIONS START WITH HOPES FOR A FEDERAL SOLUTION IN CYPRUS

The two leaders in Cyprus have launched the new negotiations process with the hope of reaching a federal settlement.

The talks were resumed by President Mehmet Ali Talat and Greek Cypriot Leader Demetris Christofias this morning after a break of four years.
The UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer was also present at the meeting.

After the launch of the new process, both leaders expressed their hope for a solution.

President Talat said that he was confident that the new process will be a successful one.

Responding to a question, Mr Talat pointed out that Turkey is in support of a solution in Cyprus and that its support had played a role in the launch of the talks after a four-year stalemate.

`We are here for solution. Ankara is supporting us. We are sure that we will succeed to reach a comprehensive settlement`, the President said, expressing the hope that a settlement would be reached by the end of the year.

Answering a question on the opening of the Yesilirmak Gate, the President said that senior aides of the two leaders will discuss the issue in the coming days.

For his part, Greek Cypriot Leader Christofias said that both sides are committed for a solution.

Asked whether the borders would be removed in Cyprus by the end of the year, Mr Christofias said `we set out with this aim. There is common will on the issue. We will work together, We want to realise this as soon as possible`.

At the end of this morning’s meeting, Mr Downer read out a statement issued by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on the launch of the negotiations on Cyprus.

In his statement, the UN Chief warmly welcomed the formal launch by the two leaders of fully-fledged negotiations.

`I commend the leaders for their seriousness of purpose, sense of compromise and commitment to seeing the peace process through to a successful conclusion`, Mr Ban said.

He said that the UN supports and encourages both parties as they take a historic step together so as to reach a negotiated settlement to reunify the island.

In his letter, the UN Chief also assured the parties that the UN will provide unwavering support through the efforts of his Special Adviser and his Special Representative and all the UN’s team.

The two leaders left the scene of the talks after shaking hands.

The next meeting between the two leaders will be held on the 11th of September when they will start their talks with discussions on governance and power sharing.

News from the Northern Cyprus.

TALAT SAYS THE TWO SIDES SHOULD MAINTAIN THEIR DETERMINATION TO REACH A SETTLEMENT

President Mehmet Ali Talat has said that the two sides should maintain their determination and dedicated work in order to reach a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem.

`I am aware that during our effort to establish a new partnership the two sides will have different views on certain aspects of the problem.

However, I also believe that these differences are not insurmountable and with goodwill and compromise from both sides, they can be bridged`, the President said in his opening statement at the launch of the new process.
Mr Talat said despite the fact that four-decades of UN-led negotiations failing to bring a solution to the problem, they shaped the main parameters of a settlement and a huge body of work came into existence.
`Moreover, we as the two leaders have managed to pen down 23 May and 1 July Agreements defining the basic structure which will have a Turkish Cypriot State and Greek Cypriot State as constituent states with equal status` he said.

The President listed the continuation of the 1960 Treaties of Guarantee and of Alliance as an essential part of a settlement; safeguards to ensure that neither side can claim jurisdiction over the other; and maintaining the internal balance between the two sides in Cyprus as well as the external balance between Greece and Turkey over Cyprus, as elements they attach great importance.

Mr Talat expressed the hope that the two sides will able to reach common ground on all issues and will be able to agree on a settlement plan that respects fully the political equality of the Turkish Cypriot People and the Greek Cypriot People.

`By doing so, we will have a good chance of gaining the approval of the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots who will manifest their free democratic wills in their separate simultaneous referenda` he said, adding that a settlement will bring peace and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean region and will make it possible for the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots to enjoy equally the benefits of the EU membership.

`Time is not on the side of a settlement`, he said, adding that the two leaders have a historic responsibility to find an early settlement to the Cyprus problem.

CHRISTOFIAS SAYS 'VIRGIN BIRTH CANNOT BE ACCEPTED`

In an opening statement at the launch of the new process, Greek Cypriot Leader Dimitris Christofias said it is of utmost importance to safeguard the basic principles which have been followed so far in the process that aims to reach a settlement of the Cyprus problem.

Mr Christofias stressed that “we must also consistently adhere to the agreed common basis that we reaffirmed during our meetings: a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, as defined by the relevant Security Council Resolutions, with a single sovereignty, citizenship and international personality.”

He noted that “the foundations of an agreement are described in the High Level Agreements of `77 and `79 which provide for the transformation of the unitary state into a federal one.”

In addition to his opening statement, the Greek Cypriot Leader Dimitris Christofias has conveyed a letter containing the Greek Cypriot Side’s views, to the United Nations officials.

In his letter, the Greek Cypriot Leader said neither confederation, nor a new partnership of two states through ‘virgin birth’ can be accepted adding that the federal solution will be a partnership of the two communities.

Referring to the working groups and technical committees, Mr Christofias said diverging views in several important issues have been identified but he added that they allowed the process to continue provided the problem would be revisited.

Issuing a call for President Talat, the Greek Cypriot Leader said that the time has come for them, who fought during difficult times for many years for the same ideals of peace and rapprochement, to take joint action and respond to the call of history to realize the vision of a reunified homeland.
