REACTIONS TO CROSSING PREVENTION AT YESILIRMAK

Some reactions have been made by political parties from both sides of the divide over the TRNC authorities rejection for crossings by Greek Cypriots at the Yesilirmak crossing border.
The Secretary General of the United Cyprus Party Izzet Izcan claimed in a written statement that the refusal by Turkish Cypriot authorities for crossings at the Yesilirmak crossing border was due to military sources.
The leader of the Communal Democracy Party Mehmet Cakici for his part criticized the Turkish Cypriot authorities for their stance regarding the Yesilirmak crossing.

Greek Cypriot government spokesman Stefanos Stefanu at a press conference today noted that the decision made by the Turkish Cypriot authorities on the eve of the negotiations process was not a positive element.

He said that both side must show good will at the negotiations table in order for progress to be made on the Cyprus issue.

KALYONCU CALLS FOR PRO SOLUTION CYPRIOTS TO GATHER AT INONU SQUARE IN LEFKOSA ON THE 1ST OF SEPTEMBER WORLD PEACE DAY

The Secretary General of the Republican Turkish Party United Force Omer Kalyoncu has called on everyone who supports a solution in Cyprus to gather at the Inonu Square in the capital Lefkosa on the 1st of September world Peace Day.

The aim of this gathering is to give a positive message to the world on the eve of the negotiations process in Cyprus.

In a statement he made, Mr. Kalyoncu said that for the negotiations process to proceed in a positive atmosphere, President Mehmet Ali Talat who is representing the Turkish Cypriot people must be supported in order to hold a strong position at the negotiations table.

He said the 1st of September World Peace Day was the perfect opportunity to show that the Turkish Cypriot people support a bi-communal, bi-zonal federal solution based on political equality under the United Nations umbrella in Cyprus.
Noting that circles against a solution in Cyprus were preparing to sabotage the 3rd of September talks that are scheduled to take place between the two leaders in Cyprus, Kalyoncu said the best way to stop these circles from achieving their goal is for the people to support the negotiations process.

He said on the 1st of September the Turkish Cypriot people should show the world that their stance towards finding a solution to the Cyprus problem hasn’t changed.

JOINT EVENT AT LEDRA FOR WORLD PEACE DAY

28 Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot NGOs – which came together in line with a call from the Cyprus Peace Platform – held a joint press conference to provide information about the event they will hold on Monday to mark World Peace Day.

A joint statement written in Turkish and Greek, under the heading “Let’s Struggle for Peace and United Cyprus” was read out in Turkish by the Cyprus Peace Platform Rotating Spokesperson Salih Uyguroglu and Pavlos Pavlu from the United Cyprus Teachers’ Platform.

The statement underlines the need to carry out an intense, active and determined struggle to bring peace both in Cyprus and to the whole world.
Before reading the statement, Mr Uyguroglu said that members of the NGOs from the South will gather at the Elefteria Square and those from the North at the Kugulu Park, from where they will walk to the Ledra Palace Hotel in the UN controlled buffer zone to express their determination to realize their objective; a United Cyprus.

Representatives from the Cyprus Peace Platform will pay separate visits to President Mehmet Ali Talat and Greek Cypriot Leader Demetris Christofias on Monday.
