The Presidential spokesperson has said that Russia should review its attitude towards the Cyprus issue in the light of the latest developments in the Caucasus.

Speaking at his weekly press briefing, Hasan Ercakica said that no nation can be forced to live under the rule of another state or regime while responding to a question on possible effects of the latest developments in the Caucasus.
Mr Ercakica said that the developments will surely have some effects on the international law from the point of view that the borders of a state cannot be changed, adding that the Greek Cypriot Side should learn lessons from this situation.

Expressing the view that the developments in Caucasus have revealed the contradicting elements in Russia’s policy, he said that Moscow should stop acting as a militant for Greek Cypriots while changing its policy towards the Cyprus issue.

`Otherwise, it will not be easy for Russia – which is a permanent member of the UN Security Council – to get rid of the double-standards` he warned.

Referring to next Wednesday’s meeting between President Talat and Greek Cypriot Leader Demetris Christofias, the spokesperson said preparations for the meeting have been continuing since Monday.
He stated that there is a common understanding for the time being that the talks should start with discussions on administration and power sharing.

This person is some what confused.!

He is full of contradictions.!

Explains the reason why he is confused.!!

Noticed how he did not say he supports what Russia did in the Caucasus, fear of US, EU and UN kicking his butt no doubt..!

ELECTRICITY PRICES LOWERED IN TRNC

The Council of Ministers has announced that the price of electricity has been lowered by 11 per cent.

The reduced prices will be valid as from the 1st of September.

Speaking after the meeting of the Council of Ministers which convened under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer yesterday, the Minister of Public Works and Communication Salih Usar said that the price of electricity was lowered after a drop in the price of fuel oil on world market.

Mr. Usar also rejected the claims that the price of electricity had been increased to cover the budget deficit.

The Minister noted that the Council also approved the minimum wage which was increased from 1060 New Turkish Liras to 1190 New Turkish Liras.

The new minimum wage will be implemented 10 days after its publication in the official gazette.

News from the Northern Cyprus ..........................

PR TALAT SAYS POLITICAL EQUALITY AND TURKEY’S GUARANTEE ARE VITAL FOR THE TURKISH CYPRIOT PEOPLE

President Mehmet Ali Talat has met with his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul in Ankara.

All aspects of the Cyprus problem were discussed at the meeting which was also attended by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Speaking at a joint press conference at the end of the meeting,
Mr Gul voiced his country’s full support to the TRNC and said that Ankara will continue its efforts to help remove all kinds of restrictions imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people.

For his part, President Talat said that Turkey’s support is very important for the Turkish Cypriot People as it is the only country providing support to the TRNC.

The President said the Turkish Cypriot Side will act with good will and adopt a flexible approach at the new round of talks to be launched next week but stressed that the rights gained will be protected.

Mr Talat said that political equality of the two sides and Turkey’s guarantee are parameters that will be protected.

Mr Talat expressed the hope that the new process will end with an agreement, adding that the Cyprus problem could be solved within the year as there is a huge bulk of work carried out on the issue.

Today’s talks came just days before next Wednesday’s meeting between President Talat and Greek Cypriot Leader Demetris Christofias who will launch comprehensive negotiations with the aim of finding a lasting solution to the Cyprus problem.

Speaking during a visit to the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce before moving on to the Turkish capital, President Talat said there isn’t a solution plan on the negotiations table being discussed or prepared, adding that a plan will be prepared by the two sides in Cyprus.

`This will be prepared by us. It is really difficult to prepare a plan which will be accepted and signed by the two sides` the President said while responding to reporters’ questions.

Pointing out that a new process is to be launched in the coming days, he expressed the hope that this process will end with an agreement.

Mr Talat also repeated that any agreement which will remove the gained rights of the Turkish Cypriots will not be accepted. But, he expressed the hope that the new process ahead will lead to a solution on the island.

Asked to comment on the Greek Cypriot Leader’s statement that `no solution can be brought to the Cyprus problem if Guzelyurt is not given` to the Greek Cypriot Side, Mr Talat said these issues should be discussed at the table and repeated his complaint over the use of the press by the Greek Cypriot Administration for bargaining.

But, the President added that he is determined not to talk about bargaining issues out of the table for now.

The President also stressed that the aim of the Turkish Cypriot Side is to bring about a federal solution and create a United Cyprus which will become part of the world.

Tonight, the President will attend the ceremony in which Chief of General Staff General Yasar Buyukanit will hand over his post to General Ilker Basbug.

I assume that is for a month, and if so, basically this increase will just about cover the inflation cost, therefore those living on minimum wage will not see their lives improve at all. If the Lira sinks again, as it did few months ago, it will be even worse for them.

Halil, you already told us what you make per months, which is way above the minimum wage in the north, but what is the average pay for those working in the north. I'm a little confused however, because last year it was reported by various forum members, that $10,000 US dollars was the GDP for the north, which is about 12,000 YTL. But if the current pay is about 1060 YTL per month X 13 months, it = 13,780 YTL or $11,480 US Dollars. Something is very wrong with this picture, because the £10,000 US Dollars GDP in the north is $1,480 US Dollars under the minimum wage. How can that be.? Is it because almost everyone is earning the minimum wage in the north, or is it because, there are way too many unemployed individuals in the north, which brings down the GDP.?? The GDP will look even worse with the new increase in the minimum wage. So Halil, what's the story on this. By contrast, the GDP for Turkey is about $7,500 US Dollars, about 25% less than the "trnc's".!!

I believe if Turkish guarantee is vital for the TC's then Greek guarantee ought to be a factor for the safety against Turks for the GC's . Where have we gone? around in circles.

"“No one can claim sole right over these resources. Turkish Cypriots have an equal sovereign right to any oil to be discovered off the coast of Cyprus” he said, adding that Turkey too had rights stemming from its close proximity to the island. "

They do have a sense of humor, dont they!!!!

Have they seen the American statements about this issue? They make interesting reading.
