THE NEWS FROM NORTHERN CYPRUS
The Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Mustafa Gokmen has renewed his call to citizens on making careful use of water- which has been a global problem remaining in high alarm.
Calls to solve growing challenges of sanitation, climate change and drinkable supplies have been renewed worldwide within the framework of the World Water Week which kicked off yesterday.
In his statement on the issue, Minister Gokmen reminded that the Ministry continues its search for alternative water resources as Cyprus has limited resources due to low rain.
However the Minister noted that the biggest project on water resources is to bring water from Turkey with the establishment of an underwater system.
Reminding that the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had earlier said that the project was almost completed, Mustafa Gokmen stated that the Dragon Rill of the Mediterranean will flow into the TRNC lands, latest by 2013.
Meanwhile, World Water Week gets underway in Stockholm where 2,500 delegates are to discuss issues around water with a special focus on sanitation and hygiene.
Almost half of the world’s population lacks proper toilet facilities, a situation that can have profound consequences for public health.
Children are among the most vulnerable to health problems caused by contaminated water.
According to UNICEF more than 5,000 children under five die of diarrhoea every day as a direct result of poor sanitation.
