A GROUP OF 15 TRADE UNIONS AND NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS STAGE PROTEST IN THE CAPITAL IN PROTEST
A group of fifteen trade unions and non-governmental organizations have staged a protest action in the capital in protest of recent price hikes.
Representatives of the civil society organizations and trade unions who gathered in front of the Lefkosa State Burhan Nalbantoglu Hospital walked to the Prime Minister’s office. on the government to withdraw the price increases.
The group which called for a withdrawal of price increases, presented the government with a 12 point package of proposals concerning the problems being experienced in the country.
During this morning’s action, the protestors chanted slogans in protest of the government’s recent actions.
A convoy of vehicles from the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Shopkeepers and Craftsmen joined the protestors at Ortakoy.
The protesters then read out a press statement in front of the Prime Minister’s office.
Speaking at the protest, President of the Chamber of Shopkeepers and Craftsmen claimed that shops and businesses were being forced to shut down due to frequent price hikes.
Reading the press statement on behalf of the 15 participating organizations, the President of the Municipality Laborers’ Union Birtan Aktolga said that the Turkish Cypriot people was waiting impatiently for the start of comprehensive negotiations on the 3rd of September.
He however added that much work had to be done before a settlement was found.
Accusing the government of trying to close the deficit in the state budget by milking the people, Aktolga pointed out that the country could not afford chaos at a time when talks to find a peace and settlement on the island was due to begin.
He nevertheless added that they could not accept the recent price hikes in the wake of peace and solution.
The statement which read that the recent financial problems and difficulties being experienced by the government was the result of ‘populist’ practices by past and present governments called on the government to withdraw the latest price hikes in fees and road taxes.
