PM SOYER SAID TURKISH PEACE FORCES AND CYPRUS TURKISH SECURITY FORCES HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFULLY CONTINUING THEIR DUTIES

The Commander of the Turkish Peace Forces in Cyprus Lieutenant General Hayri Kivrikoglu, the Commander of the Cyprus Turkish Security Forces Major General Mehmet Eroz and the Commander of the 39th Division Major General Mehmet Tas whose terms in office have ended – paid a farewell visit to Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer today.

During the visit, General Kivrikoglu thanked the Premier for the support his government had provided to the personnel of the Turkish Peace Forces in Cyprus during their term of office in the TRNC.

The General pointed out that the Force – which he said has become a part of the Turkish Cypriot People - is in Cyprus for the security of the island and the whole region.

“We hope that the negotiations aimed at bringing about a just, lasting and undiluted solution which will protect the rights of the Turkish Cypriot People, their sovereignty and political equality as well as Turkey’s position as a guarantor power – will continue` the General said.

For his part, Prime Minister Soyer said that the commanders worked in cooperation with the government during their term in office for the development of the Turkish Cypriot people and for the solution of the Cyprus problem.

Mr Soyer said that the Turkish Peace Forces in Cyprus and the Cyprus Turkish Security Forces have been successfully continuing their duties by providing peace and security to the Turkish Cypriot people.

He pointed to the importance of the support being given by the Turkish Peace Forces to the Turkish Cypriot People at a time when the economy is going through a difficult period.

The Premier noted that military triumphs were meaningless if they were not supported by economic gains and said `our main objective is to bring about a lasting and acceptable solution to the Cyprus problem on the basis of our political, military and economic gains`.

Pointing out that the Turkish Cypriot people and Turkey have common interests, he said a new partnership state where the Turkish Cypriot People will have its own state on the basis of political equality could be achieved at the negotiations, adding that a solution should protect Turkey’s position as a guarantor power.

News from the Northern Cyprus

SOME 40 ORGANIZATIONS DISTRIBUTED STATEMENTS IN BIG TOWNS TO PROTEST THE RECENT PRICES INCREASES

In their statement, it’s been stated that the organizations will continue their struggle until the government withdraws the recent price hikes or it resigns.

The organizations expressed the view that the increase in the prices is an attempt to cover the budget deficit, which they say, was the result of partisanship.

They also accused the government of bow pressure from big business.
During this morning’s action, the organizations also called for support to Friday’s(tomorrow ) protest action in Lefkosa.(Nicosia)

Meanwhile, some unions in the tourism industry have reacted angrily to the recent price hikes and warned that they will hold a series of protest actions unless the price increases were cancelled.

At a press conference yesterday, the unions claimed that the recent price increases are dragging the tourism sector into a chaos.

sorry Zan didn't get it.

You know my stance Zan, I do not want the TC's to suffer so I ca be happy. Further to that I believe TC's have as much right to Cyprus as anyone else who is legal. What I do not agree and reject vehemently is TC's taking a part of our country excluding a large portion of its citizens and call it it something that is not.

The rest is open to debate :) have a great holiday

Good Evening ,
here is the News from the Northern Cyprus again .....
have a look what's going on other side of the coin ............

REACTIONS TO CHRISTOFIAS-CHURCH AGREEMENT

Reactions are growing to press reports that a secret agreement have been reached between the Greek Cypriot Church and the Greek Cypriot Leader Demetris Christofias on the solution of the Cyprus problem.

The Presidential spokesperson Hasan Erçakıca has reiterated that a solution to the Cyprus Problem will not take place without Turkey’s guarantee.

Speaking on BRT 1’s morning news, the Presidential spokesperson referred to the upcoming negotiations process to be launched on the 3rd of September and said that the two leaders will be focusing on areas where divergences exist.

“Our expectation is for intense talks to begin on the 3rd of September. The main issues on the Cyprus Problem are clear” he said.

The spokesperson said that the positions of the two sides on the issues of power –sharing and administration have become closer.

“Christofias’s announcement that he is ready to share power could be seen as a ‘carrot incentive’ for the public opinion. In spite of the fact that there are some issues concerning the administration on which agreement hasn’t been reached yet, Christofias chose to give this as a message to some circles within the Turkish Cypriot Side’ he said.

Mr Erçakıca said that the Turkish Cypriot Side had adopted a flexible approach at the talks in order to prevent the process from being disrupted by domestic politics in the South but warned that this will not always continue to be the case.

Underlining the need to be careful and decisive when proposing final solution plans, he said that everyone must contribute to this process.

Commenting on claims that the Greek Cypriot Leader has reached a deal with the Greek Cypriot Archbishop Chrisostomos II regarding a settlement, the Presidential spokesperson said this is a very interesting issue.

“If Christofias is hoping to win the support of all political forces in South Cyprus and is expecting the Turkish Cypriot Side to help him, it means that we face a great difficult situation”

He said it was impossible to find a political settlement which could satisfy everyone on both sides of the divide.

“If he (Christofias) has such an intention, he is wrong. The announcement that Christofias and the Church have reached an agreement has deeply disturbed us” he added.

Mr Erçakıca said that the Greek Cypriot Leader would get the necessary response if he brings the results of the agreement to the negotiations table.

Commenting on the issue of guarantees, the Presidential Spokesman said that there were no hesitations on this issue, and that a solution in Cyprus will not take place in the absence of Turkey’s effective guarantee.

On the property issue, Mr Ercakica highlighted the importance of using all means, especially compensation, in order to solve the issue and said that the Greek Cypriot public’s approach on this issue was unrealistic.

PRESIDENT TALAT SAYS TURKISH CYPRIOTS’ RIGHTS WILL BE PROTECTED.

President Mehmet Ali Talat has stressed that the rights of the Turkish Cypriot People would be protected to the end.

The President’s words came at this morning’s commemoration ceremony in Erenkoy which is located in the north-west pocket of the island.

The ceremony took place at the Erenköy Martyrdom where those who fell during the struggle against Greek Cypriot attacks were also remembered.

The ceremony marking the 44th anniversary of the Erenkoy Struggle began at 10.30 this morning with the laying of wreaths at the monument.

This was followed by a minute’s silence in memory of the martyrs who fell during the village’s defense against the Greek-Greek Cypriot onslaught.

Flags were raised to the national anthem and the special book was signed.

President Mehmet Ali Talat, Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer, government officials, Turkish Ambassador to Lefkosa Turkekul Kurttekin and military officials and representatives of various NGOs attended the memorial service alongside members of the public who were taken to the village with buses organized by the Erenköy Fighters’ Association.

In an address at the ceremony, President Talat pointed out that the Erenkoy Struggle is an epic of heroism and solidarity and said that the struggle was the most important event strengthening the existence of the Turkish Cypriot People in Cyprus.

The President stated that no one should have any doubt that the freedom gained with the Erenkoy Struggle in solidarity with Turkey would be protected in the future.

Pointing out that some circles have concerns that the rights of the Turkish Cypriot people could be removed, he said `I am declaring to the Turkish Cypriot People and the World that the rights of the Turkish Cypriots would be protected to the end`.

The ceremony ended with the laying of wreaths at the Martyrdom.

Later, those attending the ceremony visited the Erenkoy Museum.
