This is how the Annan Plan was vilified

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

This is how the Annan Plan was vilified

Postby Bananiot » Thu Jul 10, 2008 3:06 pm

Lies, distortion and intimidation were some of the weapons used by the "No" lobby prior to the April 2004 referendum. One of the myths that was used to scare Greek Cypriots were the alleged comment of U.S. Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Daniel Fried on June 26 2003.

During his short visit to Cyprus four days ago, Fried was asked to comment on reports that he allegedly admitted that the US administration handed Cyprus to Turkey, through the Annan Plan, as a reward for the latter’s provision of facilities to the United States for the war in Iraq.

In his first direct comment on the reports, Fried said: "That was the silliest press story I have encountered in years. I never said it, I never thought it. That is a ridiculous thought. There is no truth to that, happily.”

Yet, Phileleftheros (Papadopoulos mouthpiece) came back yesterday and stuck to its guns, claiming that Fried made the alleged statement in front of many people of the Greek - American lobby. Phileleftheros claimed that the leadership of PSEKA was there as well as Kypros Chysostomides (then government spokesman and now minister of interior). Also, Phileleftheros claimed, the Fried statement was heard by Ambassadors of Greece and Cyprus and Greek M.P's Niotis of PASOK and Kalafatis of New Democracy.

Yesterday, Chrysostomides explained that what Fried said at the time was that Turkey needed strong persuasion to agree to the Annan Plan because Turkey was the difficult party then.

Through distortions like the above, which became top story in most newspapers and all tv stations in 2004, the Greek Cypriot people were deceived by the rejectionists to vote "no" to a the UN brokered plan. We were also told another major lie by our crying president that, in a week's time we would be full members of the EE and we would get a better plan. I predicted then that the time will come when we would be longing for the Annan Plan but the next plan that will be placed in front of us will no doubt be worse than the Annan Plan. Back in 2003-2004 we could have negotiated and better the Annan Plan (for all Cypriots) but instead we listened to the bigots and now all we hope for is for Turkey to ... disintegrate. The irony of the whole thing is that some people actually believe this fairy tail.

Are you satisfied with the lies we were fed with, do you long for more? Why do you choose not to commend on the issues put forward? Like in the case of Galanos. You are informed on Galanos's opinions and you comment on Galanos!

So the Annan Plan called for two citizenships? I did not know this!

Turkey is in the throes of the deepest political crisis in its history. She will not disintegrate, though. Two diametrically opposed groups are fighting to the death for control of the country. Eventually, one side will emerge the victor.

All the time, the real economy in Turkey is marching forward. For example, a recent forecast predicts that car production will rise from the current figure of 1.3 million per year to 2 million annually by 2012.

Whoever takes over at the helm will find themselves in charge of a country that is gaining in economic strength. We could well see a shift in the balance of power in the region after the Anglo-American alliance finally abandons its ill-conceived imperialistic adventure in Iraq. I expect Turkey to take advantage of any opportunities presented for regional expansion. A strong united Cyprus will be in a stronger position to resist such expanionism than a weak and divided Cyprus where Turkey already has de facto control over one-third of the island.

How can you say this when over 76% of the Cypriot population voted against the Annan Plan. Your assertions seem to imply that Cypriots did not possess the free will and fortitude to make their own decision irrespective of any lobbyist campaigns.

In his first direct comment on the reports, Fried said: "That was the silliest press story I have encountered in years. I never said it, I never thought it. That is a ridiculous thought. There is no truth to that, happily.”

If Fried did not make this comment, then why do all the above-mentioned witnesses testify that he did. Not that this would have made 1 iota of difference. The Annan Plan was doomed even before Fried made the alleged statement.

Yesterday, Chrysostomides explained that what Fried said at the time was that Turkey needed strong persuasion to agree to the Annan Plan because Turkey was the difficult party then.

And this is the reason why the Annan Plan strongly favoured Turkish interests to the detriment of Cyprus.

Through distortions like the above, which became top story in most newspapers and all tv stations in 2004, the Greek Cypriot people were deceived by the rejectionists to vote "no" to a the UN brokered plan. And you were the only wise one not to be deceived.  I mean get a grip....

If the next plan is worse than the Annan Plan, then that will surely be rejected as well and the TCs will languish in their isolation for many more years to come.

Without taking sides at the moment I thought that Το Δηλητήριο by Makarios Drousiotis was very interesting.

Stories and stories on this psycholigical game, named Annan plan.

I wrote this before. George Papantreou, Papadopoluos and possibly Christofias and Anastasiades knew that referendum would resulted "NO", long time before Annan plan be completed.

Some, rare times, very very rare times , Greek politicians working with a plan. This was one of them.

Good boys, bad boys, white boys, this is an American game and frequently Turkish game. In this cetain case was a very good copy of this game!!!!

Papadopoulos is blamed by someones for "NO" can you imagine the blames if he supported "YES"?

REMINDER: The G/C leader who will sign the Cyprus solution, even the best possible solution, he will be finally considered as trator- be sure for that- aa)because we are Greeks and we do not accept our leaders to know better than us and bb) (and most important) because the terms of the solution will be placed by the war winner who is Turkey.

You are Cypriot,not Greek...

Postby cymart » Thu Jul 10, 2008 5:22 pm

This is one of the major causes of the Cyprus problem because the people on this island did not build a sense of a Cypriot nation and kept thinking in terms of either Greek or Turkish but I agree with your second point completely-the winner always dictates the terms!
Greek-Cypriots are no more Greek than Americans are English!

The lies were all coming from the US/UK funded "yes" campaign that tried to present the Annan plan as a "unification" plan, when in fact it was a partition plan which was made to sutisfy their Turkish friends (which is why the TCs accepted this partition plan)

If Bananiot was right, and we voted "no" because we were fed lies, now that he "enlightened" us, we should have changed our minds, right?

Guess what? The same people that voted "no" then would again vote "no" today, and the same ones that voted "yes" then would vote again "yes" today. Bananiot and his masters have not managed to convince anybody else. Those who had interests to close the Cyprus problem with some Annan plan partition, and those who were naive enough to believe that Annan plan was a unification plan, have already voted "yes" since then.
