if you've been to cyprus lately you will have noticed many changes...the continous building, homogenisation of shops, the sort of europeanification of everything. do you think its happening too fast, that something is being lost? inta bou nomizete re kobellia tze kobelles?

Europeanization should be a welcome change - there is a huge communist party in Cyprus from the bad old days of creeping Soviet influence. I think that Europeanization is the only way that Cyprus can preserve the integrity of its banking infrastructure and its tourist economy. It will be a boon to current landowners when retirees from northern Europe want to retire in Cyprus. The biggest disadvantage will be that the cost of everything in general will rise. Perhaps personal income taxes could be scaled back as tourists underscore the government's revenues via the VAT.

Cyprus is defenetly losing it's innocense. Along with the modern change seems to be a rise in crime.

Anywhere you have asylum seekers, you will get crime.

Sad but true, talk about biting the hand that feeds you.

Where I lived in the UK, you could not even hang out your washing to dry because the asylum seekers were stealing it off the line!

I know for a fact that some tour operators here in Cyprus are now warning tourists about the asylum seekers here on the island. Last month my aunt was here and her tour operator announced on the bus from the airport to their hotel "Cypriots will not touch your belongings, but be aware of the asylum seekers".

I am not a racist, only a realist.

I don't think crime will be the sole domain of asylum seekers.

As Cyprus becomes more westernised the problems of drug use will become greater.

Drug users need money to feed their habit and unless the user is wealthy, will need to do whatever they can to get cash.

David,

You think only drug addicts would steal? How very naive.

Let's look at the 2 cases mentioned in this forum over the last 24
hours.

1 was a girl and her boyfriend who were beaten up (not robbed) by a gang of Russians.

The other case was 2 girls being raped by Lithuanians.

This is my point. You allow people from uncivilized counties into your own and watch it deteriorate.

Yes, junkies will steal, I would never argue that point, but most asylum seekers are trouble, end of.

Have you ever walked along the promenade in Larnaca at night? It doesn't feel safe anymore because of the gangs of asylum seekers that sit and eyeball everybody. Don't think for a minute that these b*stards wouldn't stick you with a knife for their own personal gain. Life to them is cheap, they wouldn't think twice about ending yours.

Mark my words, there are problems ahead!

I have seen it in Glasgow, they form gangs and now they are trying to demand protection money. What makes it worse is that in the UK, we give them free houses, mobile phones even cars and this is how they repay us! The asylum seekers are part of the reason I left Scotland.
