But why precede the the thread with an unsubstantited story?

I'm glad you understand what I am saying to Connor, RichardB.

When I hear citizens of a country that formerly regarded itself as a colonial overlord, wringing their hands over the customs of the former colony, it leaves a bad taste. Plenty of pressing problems in the UK to agonise over first.

Its the same kind of thinking that makes ordinary murderers feel so self-righteous as compared to paedophiles.

NOT in ANY way comparing ANY forum members to murderers, just pointing out the analogy.

is this a "true" story?
i read something recently about a woman (expat) in CY who gave birth and killed her newborn. very sad indeed. i remember from other threads that there are not really that many (if any) orphanges in CY.
what about abortion? is it legal in CY?

Why does it leave a bad taste...? Are you suggesting that a British citizen should not in any way critisize the goings on in another country..?

Yes there are problems in the uk and citizens of other countries are quick to point them out.

Colonial Overlords...? Yes Britain ruled India and many other countries....thats in all the history books..its a fact.

I was not wringing my hands over the customs of a former colony as you put it. I am horrified to hear stories on this honour killing tradition...lives wiped out by their own families..!

Now disagree all you like gents but to quote you perdike....I consider those taking part in honour killings not only BACKWARD but nothing more than mindless savages...!

You sound rather anti brit for some reason.

Connor, thankyou for replying. Just to clarify - you are most definitely NOT quoting me in that sentence "I consider those taking part . . . . . .
nothing more than mindless savages' Those are NOT MY words.

I am not 'Anti-Brit' in anyway. But your whole attitude seems to be that this is some unspeakable thing (which it ABSOLUTELY is) that those people in rather less than British places do. You are NOT aware of it, most British people aren't, it goes in with the mother's milk.

Another sad story which I know is the truth,

We had a lovely Sri Lankan lady working for us in Cyprus as a housekeeper, she was middle aged at the time and has spent many years looking after the rest of her family, Before she came to work for us she was married by arrangement to a much younger man. The idea was that she would work abroad and send money back to finance a home for them both.
At the end of her contract, she returned home to find her husband, had used the money, not for building a home but on gambling and his mistress. There was nothing left for the poor lady, the money she took back with her, and the farewell gifts we gave her were taken off her and she was kicked out.
She contacted me , asking if she could come back to us as it was the only time in her life she had been happy. I tried but I could not get her contract renewed.
The last I heard from her was she was working in Hong Kong and was thoroughly miserable.

Hello CC. There aren't really words to express the unfairness of life for so many. The sheer accident of where each of us is born means some have worse than nothing. That poor woman . . . and there are no doubt many many more with similar stories.

Hi,
Yes I have been told stories , by this lady and others that have made my blood run cold. This lady was a decent kindhearted and hardworking woman, If I could have got my hands on her so called husband I would have choked the living s**t out of him.
