Lets see what they said

Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer has said that the Talat-Christofias meeting was not a fruitful one.
Accusing the Greek Cypriot Side of still playing for time in spite of the change in leadership, the Premier said “like Mr Papadopulos (former Greek Cypriot Leader), the current Greek Cypriot Administration will be responsible for the non-solution of the problem, if a date is not set for the start of full-fledged negotiations in September at the meeting to be held on the 25th of July`.

Pointing out that the next meeting between the two leaders is very important for the setting of a date for substantive talks, he said `during the meeting, either the start of full-fledged negotiations will be announced or everybody will contribute to the tensions created by those benefiting from the non-solution`.

He said that the enmity in the Greek Cypriot Side towards federal principles and the principle of equality of two constituent states is very meaningful and complained of negative statements issued by the Greek Cypriot side before yesterday’s meeting.

Referring to Mr Christofias’ words that `he worked with Mr Talat against occupation` and that he should continue dialogue with him`, he said that the statement dynamited the negotiations process.

`Playing with tensions by issuing such statements at a time when negotiations continue, means dynamiting the process. I condemn this attitude` he said.

Another reaction to Talat-Christofias meeting came from the leader of the Democrat Party Serdar Denktas who claimed that the Turkish Cypriot people will oppose the idea of single sovereignty to the very end.

In a written statement, the DP leader said his party will never accept single sovereignty no matter what its content is or on what principles it is based on.

Claiming that the issues of single sovereignty and citizenship were approaches the Turkish Cypriot people could not accept, Denktas said President Talat’s duty was to take up and negotiate issues which were acceptable for the Turkish Cypriot people and not those positions put forward by the Republican Turkish Party.

He said that the outcome of yesterday’s meeting proved that President Talat’s consultation meetings with political parties was just a show.

The Speaker of the Parliament Fatma Ekenoglu has pointed out that the two leaders discussed the issues of single sovereignty and citizenship and said that the important thing is how the implementation of these concepts will be detailed.
Yesterday, President Mehmet Ali Talat and Greek Cypriot Leader Demetris Christofias discussed the issues of single sovereignty and citizenship which they agreed in principle.

A statement at the end of the meeting said that the two leaders met in a positive and cooperative atmosphere and undertook the first review of the work of the working groups and technical committees established to prepare the ground for full-fledged negotiations.

The leaders also agreed to meet again on the 25th of July when they will undertake the final review of the working groups and technical committees.

Referring to yesterday’s Talat-Christofias meeting, Mrs Ekenoglu reminded that single sovereignty and citizenship were included in the Annan Plan and federal states.

Noting that the talks between the two sides should be continued, she stressed the need to start full-fledged negotiations in Cyprus.

She said that the failure to set a date for substantive negotiations during yesterday’s discussions between the two leaders is a cause for concern for the Turkish Cypriot Side and expressed the hope that a date for full-fledged negotiations will be fixed on the 25th of July when the two leaders will meet again.

Annual gratitude events organized by various veteran societies have begun.

The events started this morning with wreath laying ceremonies at the Ataturk Monument and at the Tomb of Doctor Fazil Kucuk – the late leader of the Turkish Cypriot People.
The events started this morning with wreath laying ceremonies at the Ataturk Monument and at the Tomb of Doctor Fazil Kucuk – the late leader of the Turkish Cypriot People.

As part of the events, a delegation consist of representatives from eight veteran societies visited the Turkish Ambassador to Lefkosa Turkekul Kurttekin.

Speaking during the visit, the Ambassador said that the Turkish Cypriot People is in support of a solution to be found with the establishment of a new partnership that will protect the political equality of the Turkish Cypriot People and consist of two constituent states of equal status.

“This is a policy which was declared by the TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat and backed by Turkey” the Turkish Ambassador said.

Mr Kurttekin reminded that Greece, one of the three guarantor powers in Cyprus, had attempted to annex the island in 1974 and that Turkey prevented this from happening using her rights stemming from international treaties.

‘The Turkish Cypriot People did not close its doors to the solution of the Cyprus problem when it declared the establishment of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ he said.

The Ambassador added that the Turkish Cypriot People has also highlighted the maintenance of Turkey’s position as a guarantor power in Cyprus in case of a solution to the Cyprus problem.

He noted that Turkey is in support of the Turkish Cypriot People’s efforts towards a solution.

Speaking on behalf of the veteran societies, the President of the Cyprus Turkish Fighters’ Association Vural Turkmen pointed out that the 34th anniversary of the 20 July Peace and Freedom Day is to be celebrated this year and expressed their gratitude to Turkey for the moral and material support it has been providing to the Turkish Cypriot People for the last 34 years.

Mr Turkmen also explained their concerns about the recent developments concerning the Cyprus issue to the Turkish Ambassador.

The Republican Turkish Party-United Forces has said it was not satisfied with the outcome of the Talat-Christofias meeting.
In a written statement after the meeting, the CTP-BG Central Executive Committee said that the party was deeply concerned that a date for the start of comprehensive negotiations was not announced at the end of the meeting which lasted for more than 4 hours.

“We are demanding that a date for the start of fully-fledged negotiations to be announced when the two leaders meet again on the 25th of July. We are also calling on the UN Secretary General for the immediate appointment of a special envoy for Cyprus” the statement said.

It added that the outcome of the meeting clearly demonstrated that the Greek Cypriot Side intended to continue policies aimed at delaying the start of comprehensive negotiations.

The CTP-BG also called on all the parties concerned to do their part for the launching of full-fledged negotiations by September this year, the latest.

One thıng that I fınd very hard to understand is why the hell is the TC side pushing so hard for talks which are bound to fail. There is absolutly NO concensus or even room for a little slack on any of the major issues. As far as I can see it Talat just wants to give a good image towards his electorate , since he fed us a lot of bullshit that Denktas was the problem and that him and his "Gumbaro" Mr X could straighten things out in no time.
