Rabbi Arie Zeev Raskin, born in 1976, is the chief rabbi of Cyprus and the first rabbi on the island in many years. [1]
He moved to Cyprus in 2003 with his wife Shaindel and their children in an effort to introduce Jewish life onto the island.[2] He had previously lived in Kiryat Malachi in Israel. He is a follower of the Chabad-Lubavitch branch of Hasidic Judaism.[1] In Cyprus, he set up a Chabad house in Larnaca, close to the international airport, to serve around 300 Jewish families on the island, as well as Jewish travellers and tourists.[2]
Rabbi Raskin and his family live in the Larnaca Synagogue, which also houses a dining room, English and Hebrew library, and a kindergarten. Other activities at the Centre include a wide variety of classes and programmes designed to reach all ages and levels of Jewish learning. Activities include Discussion groups on Jewish issues, weekly Talmud and Torah study groups, special Jewish holiday programmes, Jewish email services and a website, Shabbat meals and tourist assistance. Rabbi Raskin was crowned as the official Rabbi of Cyprus on Monday 12th September 2005, at the dedication ceremony of the Centre which was performed by Chief Rabbi of Israel Yona Metzger and a representative of Rabbi Jonathan Sacks chief rabbi of the United Kingdom, Reverend Weissman. In the synagogue, Rabbi Raskin was draped with a tallit and officially took on the leadership of the Cyprus Jewish community. Other guests at the ceremony included the Israeli ambassador at the time, Zvi Cohen-Litant, Rabbi Moshe J. Kotlarsky, Vice Chairman of the Lubavitch educational division at Lubavitch World Headquarters, the Cypriot Education and Culture minister Pefkois Georgiades, and Larnaca’s deputy mayor Alexis Michaelides as well as members of the government, politicians, diplomats and other local leaders.[3]
By 2006 the building of Mikva ("ritual pool") Mei Menachem was completed, and a summer centre in Ayia Napa and the Cyprus International Jewish School were opened. "Our primary goal is to improve the quality of Jewish life for every Jew in Cyprus: the moral values and rich traditions that Judaism has to offer are things that no Jew should be deprived of." מרכז חב"ד קפריסין הוקם בשנת תשס"ג (2003) על ידי הרב אריה זאב והרבנית שיינדל רסקין בשליחותו של הרבי מליובאויטש, וזוכה לתמיכתם הנדיבה של משפחת רוהר.
פעילות
המרכז בקפריסין הוא חלק מפעילות עניפה של הבאת אור התורה והחסידות לכל מקום בו נמצאים יהודים מתוך אהבת ישראל ובסבר פנים יפות. על יסוד הפסוק "ופרצת ימה וקדמה צפונה ונגבה" שולח הרבי מליובאוויטש את שלוחיו לרחבי העולם - לפרוץ נתיבים חדשים ללבבות היהודים שבכל אתר ואתר.
מרכז חב"ד קפריסין מפעיל:
בית כנסת במרכז העיר לרנקה, מקיים מידי יום תפילות שחרית מנחה וערבית. כמו כן, ארוחות בוקר וערב מוגשות ליהודים המקומיים ולאנשי העסקים הרבים הפוקדים את המקום.
בשבתות משתתפים עשרות רבות של מתפללים בסעודת ליל שבת מפוארת עם שירי שבת ושירים נוספים. מטיילים ומטיילות רבים מתקבצים באופן קבוע כדי לחוות את החויה היהודית עם חב"ד בשבת.
גן ילדים "גן מנחם" מונה עשרות ילדים מבני הקהילה היהודית המקומית.
מערך שיעורי תורה לאנשי עסקים, מקומיים ולמטיילים הרבים.
ערבי נשים - מפגשים יחודיים לנשים לכבוד החגים וימים מיוחדים.
"פאמלי קלאב" - אחת לשבוע נפגשים ילדים והוריהם ושומעים סיפורי תורה ולומדים על החגים.
בית חב"ד מיוחד בעיר איה נאפה, הפועל בעונות התיירות.

בבית חב"ד ישנם מגוון אירועים. הפעילויות והשירותים שאנחנו מציעים, יסייעו לך למצוא מרגוע לנפש ומענה לכל צרכי הרוח: לימודי יהדות, תשמישי קדושה וספרים במכירה ובהשאלה, הכנה לבר מצווה, תפילות בשבתות ובחגי ישראל, והכוונה בכל מעגל החיים היהודי.
אפשר גם סתם כך להתקשר או להיכנס לבית חב"ד. תמיד נשתדל להטות אוזן קשבת, לייעץ ולעזור.
