Cypriot attitude to life?

Postby perdike » Sat Jun 28, 2008 4:24 pm

When our son was about 5 years old, and being a curious little lad, he asked me and his Pappas if we believed in God.

With a shoulder-shrug his Pappas leant closer and whispered "Just in case, my son, just in case".

Ever since I have treasured this remark as an example of the approach to life of a resilient, courageous and generous peole, (and I can't help thinking ArchBishop Makarios would have smiled in agreement).

What do others who live in Cyprus think?

Makarios was Archbishop. He wouldn't say "just in case", he would have arguments like all priests do. I mean maybe some priests are like that but most of them really believe there is God they don't believe in him just in case ;)

The correct written English pronunciation is PAPAS , which means dad or father , therefore applicable to a priest too.
MBAMBAS , is how a Greek would pronounce the word , but us Cypriots would simply pronounce it as Papas , same as if we were pronouncing , PAPIA , or PAMEN , PINE NA PINOUME !!!
We tend to pronounce words strictly according to their written phonetic value until we come across the name Tasos and then for some peculiar reason we write it as Tassos but do not pronounce it the same as we would pronounce ASSOS. Peculiarities of the Greek language !!
To cut a long story short Tasos is pronounced as Tasos and should be written as such , I think I will write to the relevant authorities and tell them what Plonkers they are !!!
