This is a common misconception.

Hitler was born and raised a Catholic but rejected his faith very early on. There are a number of quotes that are circulated in books and the internet that claim to prove he was an ardent Catholic/Christian but they are usually taken out of context.

Hitler actually believed that all organised religions were wrong but recognised that they could be used as an effective tool to indoctrinate the masses. He used a number of religious arguments to justify his policies (e.g. killing Jews was acceptable because they crucified Jesus) but ultimately he had no genuine belief in religion.

As he increased his power base and grip on the people, he became a bit more careless and revealed his true beliefs. He even planned to eradicate Christianity and replace it with his own 'state religion' where the position of 'God' was replaced by the State. He planned to use his own book ('Mein Kampf') as the 'bible' of his new religion and the symbol of the crucifix was to be replaced by a sword, symbolising the battle against enemies of the State.

I can assure you, Hitler was definitely an atheist.

True faith and religion is not a bad thing in itself. All the world's major religions teach peace and tolerance. For many people it's their only guide and source of comfort in life.

Problems arise because of the interpretations that some people put on their religion, but extremism exists in every belief, not just religion. Everything from football hooliganism to racial hatred is extremism and it has nothing to do with religion.

If anything, political extremism is far more destructive. Unscrupulous individuals (like Hitler and various other gits) use religion to justify their actions but that's not the fault of religion but rather those individuals and the people who listen to their interpretations rather than follow the spirit of their faith. After all, if your religion preaches peace then why would it suddenly ask you to murder your neighbour? The truly sad part is that the individuals who seek to corrupt faith and use it as a weapon are often the ones that people have trusted and elected to lead them.

As far as I know, President Bush professes to be a Christian (I don't know which denomination) but it's hardly fair to blame all his actions or those of his countrymen on religion. There is clearly a political agenda in play.

Besides, even if everyone in the world rejected their religions, it's a safe bet that the people who want to dominate the masses would find other ways of doing it.

I think he has a fair point regarding the actions of some leaders being in conflict with their professed faith, but at the same time he shouldn't be using religion in a political debate. He should argue politics with politics.

Personally, I have no problem with people of other faiths (or no faith). My best friend is a Muslim (he's from Bangladesh) and we get along very well. Again, it's just the extremists that are a problem but they are a problem for everyone, not just people of one religion.

You have to be specific on what christianity means. Is it the one defined by G. Bush, the crusaders etc. or the word of Jesus Christ as found in the new testimony? For me is the latter. and if it is that one therefore christianity has nothing to do with what you mean. Islam could have a similar meaning.
