Not on about a compromise between us you fool. I meen between the unstoppable force meeting the immoveable object that is Greek and Turk. It just seems that one of the best placed destinations is being ruined just like the case was in Ireland/N.I be small minded education from the start by teaching people to hate the other side for things that went on years ago.

If we were all like that we as a world would all still be fighting the Germans.

I can assure you that the serving UK Forces pay for their accomodation in Cyprus aswell as still paying Tax in the uk.

If you don't ask piratis you don't get. They haven't asked in the last ten years, and they won't ask now.
I think your new President seems to think he can get on with the UK, unlike old Pappy.

That makes it worse dcoops, because the UK goverment does not pay Cyprus any rent for the land the bases are on.

You are the fool, not me. How is the Turk/Greek situation related with the presence of your bases in Cyprus, other than the fact that you have collaborated with Turkey in order to both take parts of our island under your rule?

Purdey, the USA and UK armies are stationed around the world, not just in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I hope the British bases will be out of Cyprus as well.

I also would like to see the Bases pulled out of Cyprus, and why stop there lets remove all the Brits full stop and watch the arse fall out of the Cyprus economy. Its no wonder that the problems in Cyprus never get resolved if they all have the mentality of some of the people on here!!

But I wonder, when you go to Spain, France or any other country, do you demand that those countries should also give you bases in return? I don't think so. So why such a demand from Cyprus? Cyprus is our own island and it should be up to us if we want you bases or not, and we don't. Beyond that it is up to you if you want to visit Cyprus or not. We don't depend on you.
and clearly by your comments you dont like us either
Simple answer...we dont have to have bases there...as we are all part of the NATO alliance and EU we all train in each others country..and just to let you know there are training areas in Germany that are still ceded over to the allies at the end of WW2..and until recently Castle Martin in Wales was a German tank training base..
Oh and can i remind you that the EU your country rushed to join (i think that must be the we you speak for) is planning an EU military force that if the lisbon treaty goes through all countries must contribute to..and train together for any eventuality..ha ha you and i could be sharing a trench together in the future!!!!
Good night for now.

I would have no problem if the UK had some military training in Cyprus, while Cyprus had some military training in the UK. I have no problem when this is mutual.

But how is that related with the vast bases you occupy in Cyprus which are probably the biggest overseas military bases in the world? Would you give to us equivalent sized bases, on prime coast land, in the UK?

8) I personally would welcome cross training between Cyprus and the UK...i think it would help cement relations between the two countries - but Cyprus has not Signed up to NATO which would mean its forces being part of NATO and training within NATO.
Maybe the reason is that there is harmonisation within NATO on certain items such as equipment, ammunition, etc and with Cyprus that would mean a huge budget to upgrade and modernise.
And of course there is the question of Turkey also........
You could then certainly train on some huge areas within the UK..salisbury plain, otterburn, brecon beacons etc - areas where the british public are banned from, usually for their own safety. and then there are training areas in Canada - Suffield training area is Huge!

purdey wrote:Fair enough Piratis, but I will ask again, why does the Cypriot Goverment not demand their land back. I am quiet sure the British public would be right behind you. In general terms the British public tend to be very fond of Cyprus and cypriots.
Out of interest what would happen to the prime coast line the bases occupy ?

It'd probably get covered in scrap cars like the rest of Cyprus. They don't seem to have cottoned on the fact that they spoil the landscape, and no one has been enterprising enough to open a scrap metal yard with the world price of steel on the increase again.
