I don't profess to being an expert in Cypriot history, but exactly why did they stop at Famagusta?
The British are the ones who involved Turkey in the Cyprus issue back in the 50s, in their effort to defeat the Cyprus liberation struggle by their usual divide and rule tactics.
Partition of Cyprus was in fact first proposed back in the 50s by the British.
The Turks didn't take the whole of Cyprus for 2 reasons:
1) If they took the whole of Cyprus then they would either have to kill us all, or have a constant problem like the Israelis have with the Palestinians.
2) Because they agreed with the UK and USA to take just half of it. The UK would obviously not want to have its bases on land that would be controlled by a powerful country like Turkey. We all know the problems that the Turks caused to the Americans when Americans wanted to use their bases in Turkey to invade Iraq from the north. It was much better for the UK to have bases on land of small and weak Republic of Cyprus, that would not want to open a second front against them when Turkey would be occupying half of our island.
