The Right to Free Speech?

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

There is nothing wrong with free speech as long as you don't upset people that don't deserve it.

Sometimes people can go below the belt with free speech.

Well sometimes people claim totally untrue things so have to be challenged. As long as they don't commit libel or slander then that is what free speech is all about.
You sometimes get people claiming that 9 weeks 4 days is 3 months believe it or not.
Then they post photos of themselves in a pub on sites while claiming not to have been out. Unbelievable isn't it?

I can't believe people would do that.

Thankfully i'm not that type of person and am honest as the day is long so I wouldn't dream about that sort of thing to be honest.

Hi Niki,

So, can I run this by you, if person or persons on a forum, said things about you which were untrue, and called you names, you would have the right to sue them, or would it be the forum which would be responsible.

Slander is defamation using the spoken word, libel is written or permanent form. I think you would have to show that you had suffered as a result of a defamatory statement, simply calling someone an offensive name is probably not enough. I'm sure Google could tell you more about defamation. And of course on the forum you would have to find the real identity of the offender. I have not read all the small print in the Ts&Cs of Cyprus Forum but it is likely they have a clause that protects them.

The forum tends to have members that hide their true identity and write things that in day to day life they would never usually say face to face - a form of escapism. Therefore if someone on the forum using a made up alias wrote lies about 'Cheshire Cat' for example, they and you are unknown persons and therefore how can you sue someone when you don't really know who they are or prove that they knew who you really are?

In other words, thats forum life and must be taken with a very large pinch of salt. However much that stinks! :?
