Pier 39 more than likely Boomer, where there are many shops and restaurants. There are many other places along Fisherman's Wharf where you can get it also. Some even carve out a small round sourdough bread and serve with clam chowder inside it.

There's no need to wash up, because you eat your "plate" also.

One of my favourite restaurant in San Francisco is in the industrial section of the city, but it is a classic of a place where I have been eating for the last 30 years, and when ever I'm in SF these days for a visit. It is called "The Old Clam House". If you ever go there Boomer, sit at the original section, which is where the bar is. The other section was added about 15 years ago or so. It's only about an hours drive north of San Jose.

Here's more info for you Boomer. They might even send you the recipe.!!

The Old Clam House ($$$$)
Seafood

299 Bayshore Blvd, San Francisco 94124
At Oakdale Ave

Phone: 415-826-4880
Fax: 415-826-1689

Good Food, Good Drinks, Good Service

The Old Clam House has been a San Francisco landmark since 1861 and a favorite hangout for locals. Their food is hearty, servings are more than plentiful and the prices are reasonable. When you sit down, they immediately bring a small cup of fish broth for each diner and a basket of fresh sourdough bread. The bartenders are friendly and efficient but more importantly, they mix a good drink. (Be sure to check out the barstools. They're so cool.) The waitstaff are congenial and provide excellent service. The atmosphere is casual and the surroundings make you feel like you're dining in an old restaurant on the Barbary Coast. The Old Clam House definitely has a good vibe. Give it a try. You won't be disappointed.

Pier 39 sounds like it....I do not spend much time in San Fran...usually I spend any available time in la la la land...I hang around Venus Beach as I have some friends working in tattoo shops... ...I also get it here as well and it is served in a sourdough bread...It wouldn't taste the same without bread...just great actually...especially if you are a bread eater...

But thanks for the advice I will give them a tingle and try and get the recipe out of them...I will also try out your recomendation next time I am in town...

thanks again Kikapu

Boomer, I've just remembered another place that I have eaten dozens of times in Monterey, California which is called the
"Old Fisherman's Grotto" on the Monterey Pier, which is a family run business started by Sabu Shake Sr., the Elephant Boy in the movies many years ago. He was a real gentleman who knew all his customers and sadly passed away few years ago, but his son's run the business, which include their own fishing boats and another restaurant on Cannery Row in Monterey. Here is the best part. They also can and sell Clam Chowder Soup and ship them, or you can buy it directly if you are there on your next trip. It's about
1 1/4 hour drive from San Jose going south. They too have excellent clam chowder, even if it comes out of the can.!

Here are some sites for you.

I know Venice Beach very well. Also known as the "Muscle Beach". It has to be the place to visit by all those visiting LA, specially on any weekend of the year. I usually rent a bike and ride to Santa Monica and Malibu along the beach and back. You see the most "interesting" people in your life.

It is a great place to spend few hours.

Had them taped for the occassion

The first time it was kinda scary...fresh from the fight with holie and with a taste for blood by now, I was hesitant...

The second time at the promenade, Santa Barbara, he was relaxed...

The last time I was in San Jose was 2 year s ago, and it was kinda a tight meeting...in and out like flynn...

I used to come 3 to 4 times a year and especially during Comdex in Vegas in November...Since 89 actually...I still get my 501s from Macys, when on special...
