Nicosia. A group of men stormed a small village police station near the southwest coastal town of Paphos and beat up four officers in a raid to free a prisoner, police in Cyprus said on Sunday, cited by AFP.
The 27-year-old detainee had himself been arrested just hours earlier for assaulting members of the force.
A group of around four men approached Peyia police station on Saturday night and began shouting abuse before breaking into the building where they attacked the four officers on duty using their fists.
Three suspects and the freed man were later caught by police after they were seen being treated at Paphos general hospital where the injured officers had also gone to have their injuries tended.
Police say they are still looking for another man.
Those held now face charges of breaking and entering a police station and several counts of assault, police said.
