Want licence to drive motorbike - what should i do?

Postby haris_el » Sun Jun 22, 2008 8:20 am

Hello to everyone!

I 've been driving a car in Cyprus for about 5-6 years. Now i am going to buy a motorbike and i am wondering what should i do to be able to drive one.
Definitely my bike will be at least 250cc...

Should i take lessons, go get a driving licence and then buy the bike?

Or can i drive my own bike with an L sign for a while, and then go and get a license.
I was trying to find out in the government site, however there are 1000 other stuff , than explaining directly what one should do!

Thanks guys!

Depending on whether you can already ride a bike or not, you just need to get a provisional licence and go buy a bike. There's a simple test to get the provisional which consists of identifying half a dozen road signs.

Your best bet is to contact a driving school who will do all the necessary paperwork for you & even take you to the test centre. The whole lot including bike hire, full licence & test should cost you around €200. If you still have a UK licence, you can send it off with your full Cypriot bike licence and get Category A put on it.

If you're near Larnaca, Loullis driving school 24636023 make it all very easy.

I am in limassol...

So i would need to go the the licences office to get a provisional one, get the bike, and then do some lessons and go to get the full one...

Thanks for the reply.

But since i have a Car license, why should i be examined again on road signs?

I will call on Monday and ask them exactly. Hopefully they will be helpful, and not be the typical government employees :)

I have a car license too, and every other category apart from D, but that's the way it was for me. Unless it's different if you have a Cypriot car license? Maybe it is.

It literally is just a bloke with a flip chart showing you half a dozen signs and you naming them.

As murf said the only thing you need to do is go to the licenses office and pass a test which is easy if you know all the signs. You can buy a small book from any bookshop to learn them before you go there. You will pay a small amount for the test and get your license. Thats it. By the way I believe that all cities have such office (not sure). If its just for a bike you dont need any driving school. You dont need more expenses

It depends if you speak Greek or not. You would certainly struggle at the Larnaca centre if you went without someone who knows the procedure or language.

I am sure that in Cyprus they have no problems with English speaking drivers. My driving teacher was teaching foreigners as well. I am sorry I dont know about the other cities. You might be right murf62

My son did this today - and PASSED! Now I have to worry about him going out on a scooter! :( It is not easy being a mother!

Whilst my son was preparing and taking the 'test' myself and Webbo took the dog for a walk in a 'Forestry Park' that I did not even know existed - located just metres away from the test centre.

We had a lovely 20 minute walk (there were several posted routes for walkers and one for cyclists) with some marvelous views to boot! I will certainly go back there again as there was so much to see (just not enough time to do it all)
