Carrefours pre-packed meat

Postby Hazza » Sat Jun 21, 2008 9:16 am

Does anyone have any idea as to why the pre-packed meat in Carrefour has its date blacked out with a permanent marker? Bought some minced beef last week which gave myself, my girlfriend and a friend of ours a stomach ache.

I've sent a complaint to them via their "contact us" section on their website, but as you can imagine, its been ignored (suprise, suprise).

Is this standard procedure, or shall I just assume they black out the date as they have something to hide?

Please note, I'm only talking about the Larnaca store, haven't looked at any of their other stores.

grab some more ASAP and take it to HACCP (it rhymes :) ) - and then watch evening news. Love scandals.

It's usually because the meat was packaged, then frozen which makes the date irrelevant. I'm no retail expert, but am pretty sure they should put a new date on it when they put it on the shelves defrosted.

I won't buy from Carrefour now and haven't for ages after a couple of similar experiences .

I buy all my meat from Metro now and have no problems ~~ the meat tastes good too.

supermarkets are not permitted to change dates on any products, nor are they allowd to defrost meats. they must however clearly state when a product is coming to a best before date usually the products are sold at a discounted price.
best before must not be confused with a use by date, the differenceis you can safely consume a prouct 3 months after the best before date.
food fresh or frozen by law has to be kept at an ambient temperature

fresh has to be above 0 but no higher than 8 degrees
frozen has to be at least -18 to have maximum shelf life.

You would have to take it to the Ministry of Health,

HACCP (Hazzard Analysis Critical Control Points) is a system on which all food manufacturing/Service establishments must base thier food safety system (EU Regulation 852/2004). If it can be proved that the food safety management system is not in place/ being adhered to then the fines can be quite substantial

Your figures are correct for the storage of fresh and frozen foods but
Ambient means room temperature :)

I bought a whole chicken and used it before the sell by date. It smelt so bad cooking that I had to throw it out and open all windows to get rid of the smell.
