Sony PSP - mini review

Postby erolz » Fri Apr 29, 2005 10:18 am

Whilst in the US recently I took the opportunity to buy a Sony PSP (playstation portable). I have to say I ike this machine a lot.

I like the design and build quality. I like the screen which is excellent. I like the built in wifi functionality. I liked the price (USD 250).

It does have some downsides. The screen is not usable in direct sunlight. The games (being dvd style based) can have long load times in them. The game / movie disk are a proprietary system (UMD) so at the moment there is no way to burn your own disks for the machine (though you can store your own data - movies, pics and songs to the memory stick)

Overall I think it's a great peice of kit and has a great future ahead of it and I am very happy with my purchase.

It is due for release in Europe in September at a price of 179 sterling or 250 euros. Just a word of warning to those, like myself, who buy one outside of europe. The machine does have region coding. Sony have said that this will not be implemented on games, so games from any region will work on any PSP but for movies thery will be inforcing the region coding so movies bought in europe will not play on a USA PSP (but they will play on a Japanese one which is the same region as Europe).

How long will it be before somebody is able to patch it/modify it to become region free?

It is my personal opinion that such hacks/ modification are sooner or later inevitable. Allready there are a number of 'hacks' that are extending the capabilites of the PSP beyond that which Sony is currently supporting itself. Hacks to add web browsing capabilites and access to chat and messaging systems like IRC and AIM already exist. There is also a project to port Linux to the machine, which if acheived will only open the hardware up for futher exploitation.

my younger brother bought a PSP. the graphics are pretty cool and apparently you can play mini DVDs and mp3s on it.

personally i would only buy it for its movie and song capabilities but its too heavey to use just as an mp3 player since you can insert 1GB memory cards, whereas the mini ipod only has a fixed space of 4GB.

another thing i heard is you can play movies downloaded from the net but you need some kind of hacking code (since the PSP can only play DVDs) .

im also feeling like it would make a great way to watch movies in class :).

oh and as far as its gaming capablities the wireless internet feature only allows you to play with other players but you cant actually acess internet services.
