Gav

Back to original thread Re buying fish from the north

please dont take offence at this and start swearing again

I voted no , The main reason being that we have to adhere to safety standards in the EU (these are laid down in Law and are not negotiable)
Can you give any guaratees that the same standards are happening in the north? And by this I dont just mean your personal guarantee but a link or the suchlike to food safety regulations in the north and the practices that food businesses must adhere to, to ensure that the products are safe for retail sale to the public

eg. the Law in the EU comes under EU Regulation 852/2004

I should also add that this posting does not refer to the individual buying from a local fisherman on the quayside but to the bulk supply for retail sale to the general public

Many thanks

These fish have to meet EU standards before they are allowed into the south, the bottom line is that you are not worried about the fish but the benefit it will have on TCs in the TRNC.

He probably cannot. The same would apply to Carefour supermarket in Limassol who seem to be rubbing out their sell by dates on pre packed meat.

Absolutely not viewpoint

I have visited the North of the Island on each of the 5 occasions I have been over in the last 8 months and spent my hard earned cash, And I assure you I have no hidden agenda to see TCs suffer.

This was a serious question about a subject which I am passionate about.

So I would ask please that you dont jump to assumptions about my post

I voted 'no' on this one even though I don't live in Cyprus as I wouldn't buy the fish any more than I would buy anything else labelled 'Produce of Northern Cyprus'.

There are a lot of goods available in the UK that all come from Northern Cyprus, mostly fruit and vegetables but various other things too. It is my personal policy not to buy any of these things as I feel that the regime in Northern Cyprus is illegal and I will not support it in any way.

I can see no reason why I should spend even a single penny on goods that could well have come from lands taken from my own family and countrymen. While this may not specifically apply to fish, I think the principle is the same.

While it may be true that other countries can buy the goods and then put other labels on them, at least I will not have consciously bought them.

This is not a personal slight against Gavcar, just my personal policy which is common to many people that I know.
