Excellent Cypriot restaurant in Philadelphia, PA, USA

Postby Mills Chapman » Fri Jun 20, 2008 2:27 am

Hello Everyone,

I just want to let people know that if they are ever in Philadelphia, they should vist Kanella, a new Cypriot restaurant that has excellent food. The atmosphere is very nice - a good romantic place and not necessarily one that you go to everyday for souvlaki. I just wrote a review for the Zagat's guidebook and was the first one to do so for this restaurant. Here is my review (Zagat's likes puns in their reviews):

The options won't be "all Greek to you" at this charming Cypriot bistro with many of the dishes being native to this independent republic. A plethora of delights will leave you "divided" over what to order, but honoring the island's famous deity, they all have an "aphrodisiacal" effect. Low-key servers seem genuinely fascinated by the novel cuisine. BYOB to "sip or-eat" without it. "Sigh - prices" make it a cherished but infrequent treat.

We are getting very provincial, going overseas to eat the food we get at home!

No wonder there are so many "Greasy spoons" here.

Kafenes, they listed it like that to say the cuisine - Greek - and the location, the Gayborhood. There is a neighborhood here in Philadelpha where about 30% of the residents are gay. Being not of that persuasion, I happen to live in this neighborhood as it is very clean, safe, pretty (old colonial architecture), fairly cheap, centre-left politically, and close to most of downtown. Since there are lots of gay residents in this neighborhood (pronounced "nay-bor-hood" of course), someone thought it would be witty to call it the "Gayborhood." That helps bring in a lot of gay tourists from across the country, which helps the local economy. I'm just careful to avoid the saunas in the basement of the local gym.

Ironically, I know about 7 Greek/Cypriot people on my block, but none of them are gay except for maybe one.

Oh I see. Like some of these neighbourhoods where if you drop your wallet, you have to kick it to the next neighbourhood to pick it up. :)

Kafenes, you can always use the safe way to pick up things, the weight lifter's squat rather than bending over.
