:P

well they changed the way the cities and towns are spelled, the reason is clearly because Nicosia, Limassol and Larnaca where translations back when Cyprus was a British colony. Now they are Lefkosia, Lemesos and Larnaka.

actually nicosia is not just the colonial name of nicosia,it is older than that. i think its from the time the italians ruled cyprus, when i checked i found another italian city named nicosia in sicily and i was told that it is an original italian name.......who knows what the truth is,history is so complicated when it comes to naming!!!

i think everything becomes complicated when it comes to history!

but that is really interesting regarding the names of Cyprus.

Does anyone know how the original names came about (Larnaka, Lemesos etc).

All I know about names, history and Cyprus is that Aphrodite got her name from being born from the foams of the island's waves.

i only know about larnaka a few things....according to history(not always accepted by everyone) the first person who inhabited cyprus(larnaka) was kittim and his family, kittim was one of the grand children of noah. noahs children after the deluge were instructed to inhabit the rest of the earth. noah had 3 children.his eldest son was japheth.japheths children inhabited the eastern med and more specifically the area where today we find greece ,turkey, cyprus but not the middle east. from japheths children ,kittim relocated to cyprus
from kittim the first city in cyprus got its name=kitium
the name lasted for thousands of years since we know that in ancient greek times people from larnaka were called kitieus eg .zenon o kitieus. now how did we end up to larnaka...well, in ancient greek larnax used to be a small box where they put the bones of dead people.so scientists assume that the name larnaka is a christian name that was given to the city much later ,most propably because cyprus was one of the first countries to accept christianity and there were a lot of martyrs on the island.the bones of the martyrs were put in larnakes(plural of larnax) and buried. of course this with time changed(started using coffins) and larnakes were not used anymore but they gave the name to the city.unsurprisingly cyprus in many theological books is referred to as the island of martyrs and saints.

thats all i know about larnaka!!!and andy is right,it should be spelled with k because the plural of larnax is larnakes!!
i dont know anything about lemesos.......
