Strange Manners Indeed! ...... Rituals and Taboos.

"Manners maketh a man!" and "Good manners open doors!" etc. :D

We all know the virtues of proper manners: but what of those strange habits, rituals and traditions which seem to serve little purpose.

Cyprus certainly excels in eccentric mannerisms ..... And as for Britain  ... don't get me started!

Most unnerving is the "Don't sit with your back to someone," instruction. Fine except in some situations (cinema, car) it leaves me strangely uncomfortable as I am made conscious of this social taboo.

Which ones leave you flummoxed? :?

Really?

What if they go to church 6 or 7 times a week - and I mean on different days ?

Then there's a huge problem :(

I believe the run up to the Cyprus Easter is particularly bad with no meat allowed .

Eating soup with your spoon dipping the soup away from you and tilting your bowl away from you. This is from the seafarers who didn't want hot soup spilling on them in rough weather. I was taught to do this and struggle not to do it even now - on dry land!

Addressing an envelope with the man's initials when it is intended for the man and his wife. Everyone does this in polite society, I make a point of not doing it.

The Cypriot 'tut' drives me up the wall as well, with the backward tilt of the head!

Drinking tea only from a bone china cup (accompanied with the saucer of course) whilst tilting one's little 'pinkie' in a ridiculous upright snobby position! PLEEEEEEEEAAAASE!

BTW, although I am English, I do NOT drink tea - coffee only and preferably piping hot and in a BIG mug. Please keep this info for future invites

Not just a Cypriot thing - (but I have experienced this lots over here) - the way men talk 'down' to women as if we are inferior.

I can be trying to 'solve' something here and getting nowhere; Webbo comes onto the scene and hey presto! einai 'Ohi problima'!
