Not strictly true..

We were due to have some non-potable water delivered yesterday but the tanker was commandeered to help fight the fire.

The guy has just been today and he spent most of yesterday running water (albeit non-potable) to the fire fighting effort.

It was probably just convenience.

Why not use it if it was non-potable and already had means of delivery to the fire (in a tanker). Once the fire was out, you could deliver more non-potable water to wherever it was destined. Just makes practical sense. Would have been silly to have done otherwise.

there i go, thinking like a person who lives on a huge continent. thanks for pointing that out.
but if you didn't have a water shortage, would the fires be there at all to begin with? aren't you all just a little dry and parched?????

Dry and parched is still normal for a Mediterranean climate ... just like in California.

ah, but california is going to fall off the rest of the continent and sink one of these days. is that Cyprus's destiny?

Way too early though to be this dry and parched for Cyprus ! It is only June and we still have the 'extremely hot and dry' months of July and August to endure :(
