AQ, please be logical... European integration, fuel prices, global economic slowdown, inflation etc... If you think Bulgaria is cheap holiday destination now... think again in 5 years time. I am scared to think what Cyprus will become in few years...

I can guess ~ ghost towns of run down holiday homes where the tumble weed rolls down the street western style and the lovely pools are reduced to mossie breeding grounds .

A free derelict holiday home given away in the prize draw on the twice a week service from Heathrow to Larnaca..

Not a pretty sight

I remember the Pre- Tourists times , commonly known as the "Skint" days or "Donkey "days when Cypriots young and old left Cyprus for the greener pastures of nations such as the UK , Australia, Canada and South Africa so that they could work mostly as waiters in Restaurants and Hotels graduating to these position having first done a few months doing the washing up.
Naturally all those years ago back in the late 50s and early 60s tourism was virtually non existent not only in Cyprus but in many other destinations.
We are a small island that , unless we find black gold , rely on tourist revenue which amounts no doubt to a very significant sum since it is by far the biggest earner of foreign currency . The Tourist Industry is I believe the largest employer of labour on the island .
I fail to see how on earth would the Cypriot economy survive without the precious earnings from tourism as well as from the British buying property and spending their retirement years in Cyprus , or just simply settling in Cyprus with their families. So until black gold is discovered our reliance for economic survival relies on the Tourist Industry .

I have no idea about North Cyprus or the TRNC or the illegal occupation.

My point is, does the south of the Island want tourism?

Because you are doing a very good job of saying we love your money but we think we can treat you like dog-shit and you will still keep coming back for more.

I don't think so.!

Yeah why not?... Cut to the chase ..... just send us your money and leave out the middle-man ... the British tourist! ... saves everyone a lot of trouble and very environmentally friendly!

Don't let the lager heads and druggies in and many other types of tourists will come... you know the type you'd really want such as families, elderly, people with interests other than drinking/clubbing/popping E's.

Lots of people have seen the beauty of Cyprus... but only on the telly, in the papers and on the internet... or had it described by the word of mouth. But through the very same channels they have also acquired information about 'uncontrolled sex parties', underaged drinking, drugs and violence between criminal groups.

The water issue is 'easy' to solve. Tourists get a certain amount each day, X litres/person... a fair amount that should suffice for brushing teeth, drinking, cooking and a daily shower. No more unlimited supplies. If it's not enough they will have to pay (a lot) extra per used litre and most of this would go to the government to finance importing of water if necessary.

People leaving their shit on the beach? Government employed guards can easily handle this by giving them fines. Fines that must be paid within 15 days or before leaving the country. Upon departing their passports will be checked against a database. Unpaid fines = pay immediately. Or else it will be sent through EU channels to be paid in their home country... with 100% interest.

Drugs? The police can handle that. Confiscate the drugs and fine the user carrying for personal use. Then send them home and do not allow them back in 3-5 years. Perhaps they've grown up/wisened up/cleaned up their act the next time they try to visit Cyprus. Organised drug traffickers/dealers should be heavily fined, jailed, beaten to a pulp and deported for life.

People making noise? Depending on the type of noise made I guess fines could be in order even for this nuisance.

The government should take action against irresponsible motorists as well of course. No matter if they're tourists or Cypriots.

Crush their vehicles? That's one solution. If it doesn't help... crush their genitals! We could be saving lives. ;)

But of course... the trash won't be able to pass on their bad genes. Hence no more trash is born. In the future there will be less irresponsible motorists (like father like son etc... you get the idea).

It's a double edged sword really. Someone who had his genitals crushed for driving like a nutter on a crowded street are less likely to drive like a nutter again. Someone who lost his nuts will think twice before doing stupid things behind the steering wheel ever again. He'd say to himself 'if those crazy Cypriots crushed my balls for revving up at Nissi Avenue, God knows what they will crush next time'. ;)

Says Ionas ~ who shouldn't be taken too seriously sometimes
