I think the EU should supply these to Cyprus, after all they are going to want to use us one day !

Serious though, we should get assistance from ther EU to purchase appropriate equipment as they will only pay out later in hugh grant aid somewhere down the line.

Let those greedy MEPs take a small pay cut and we can have a few more.

The RoC has at least two specially modified Russian Kamov 32s for fire fighting...

...that were even sent to assist Lebanon on at least one occasion...

Of course, there's always a better fire fighting chopper out there but we're not exactly defenseless either.

I understand that this type of equipment comes at a considerable price and then you have the added costs of pilot training and aircraft maintenance. However, Cyprus is a dry island which is prone to bush fire activity. The loss of property, and the potential for cultural and heritage losses is a serious threat and therefore I consider it an excellent investment if Cyprus takes the next step in combating fires by adding these very capable aircraft to it's fire fighting arsenal.

Here is some information on the aircraft in question.

So, what are your thoughts? Should the Cyprus government take more initiative and invest in hardware that will protect Cypriot Citizens from bush fires? Or do you think that it is already doing enough?

Bafidis, I hate to bring this up at a time like this. Whenever there is a fire in Cyprus, I feel my heart bleed. I had made a statement against the provocateurs for war, that the 'monies' would be better spent on 'fire fighting' instead of 'arming'. It would be a good idea to have something left to live in. I am sure they could arrange their budget to improve the fire fighting capabilities. Surely EU will help with the purchase of suitable aircraft. These fires are recurring every year and still the same arguments and still not enough done to fight it.

What seems to be evident is that Cypriot Governments traditionally lack the vision to adequately plan for the future. We have seen this with the current water crisis, and in my opinion we are seeing it again with the Republic ruling out such capable equipment based on costs and logistics. This type of hardware will inevitably save the Republic millions over the long term and will save property and lives.

No Cypriot would like to see the potential loss of Kykkos monastery. Not to mention the destruction to the state forrest. Remember when Greece almost lost Olympia?

Perhaps the EU can offer financial aid to Cyprus by purchasing such equipment which can also be used to benefit the whole EU in the event of catastrophic fires. If Cyprus also offers assistance to other EU countries such as France, Spain, Italy, and Greece by utilising her state of the art aircraft, they will also reciprocate when we are in need. This will also provide Cyprus with extra support from the EU over the Cyprus Problem as the Republic will take a more pro-active role within the EU. There are many benefits and it pains me that Cypriot politicians do not see the benefits.

With such politicians, I dare say they are deserving of a pay cut. Their pay exceeds their abilities by far. :(

How do you rate the Kamov against the CL415? Do you think the CL415 has quicker transit times and hence is more capable?

Do you also believe that the Republic should own instead of leasing as it would then be able to assist other EU nations and hence receive "other" benefits down the track?

Defence is just as vital as fire fighting, if not more when you have 40,000 foreign invaders on the island.
