Fire!

It's about 10km away from us and apparently headed this way! Is there any way to find out what's going on, any numbers to call?

I just noticed it on my walk. A huge clowd of smoke billowing upon the horizon. According to sense of direction and map reading skills, it is in the hills above Foinikaria. This is a long way from town.

We were supposed to have some water delivered today but all the tankers have been requisitioned to take water to the fire...

The fire is at Kellaki.

Just phoned the Municipality who said that they are evacuating people to our village school so it must be ok. Ambulances going past at the moment.

Herald Tribune wrote:A huge forest fire raged in southwest Cyprus on Wednesday, threatening holiday homes on the parched island, fire authorities said.

They said the fire was being kept away from residential areas but at least three holiday homes were badly damaged.

"It is very large, it is very difficult to gauge right now how big it is. It has yet to be brought under control," fire brigade spokeswoman Lisa Kemidjis said.

Helicopters from British military bases in Cyprus were assisting local firefighters and Greece was expected to send aircraft later on Wednesday.

It was not immediately clear what caused the blaze, which started before dawn and quickly spread through the mountainous region between the coastal cities of Larnaca and Limassol.

Cyprus is experiencing one of its worst droughts on record and plans to start importing water from Greece this month.

So it's watch this space! Not yet under control.

With the lack of water to put the fire out this may become a big problem!

Webbo said he could see the billowing smoke this morning - all he could fathom was that it seemed to be over towards the Larnaca area!

Nothing yet. It's on the east side of Limassol, not near Larnaca. Up the Parekklisia/Pyrgos road.

The fire department says we should be ok.

I thought they use sea-water to put forest fires out :? ... Certainly they were practicing with helicopters carrying sea-buckets last week whilst I was out swimming.

That makes sense!

Grump said that water meant for his area was diverted though? That may have been unnecessary.
