Herald Tribune wrote:A huge forest fire raged in southwest Cyprus on Wednesday, threatening holiday homes on the parched island, fire authorities said.

They said the fire was being kept away from residential areas but at least three holiday homes were badly damaged.

"It is very large, it is very difficult to gauge right now how big it is. It has yet to be brought under control," fire brigade spokeswoman Lisa Kemidjis said.

Helicopters from British military bases in Cyprus were assisting local firefighters and Greece was expected to send aircraft later on Wednesday.

It was not immediately clear what caused the blaze, which started before dawn and quickly spread through the mountainous region between the coastal cities of Larnaca and Limassol.

Cyprus is experiencing one of its worst droughts on record and plans to start importing water from Greece this month.

So it's watch this space! Not yet under control.

With the lack of water to put the fire out this may become a big problem!

I thought they use sea-water to put forest fires out :? ... Certainly they were practicing with helicopters carrying sea-buckets last week whilst I was out swimming.

They were trying to scoop you up! :D

Just heard about the fire on the news, worryingly it's pretty close to my mothers village, hopefully they'll be able to get it under control...

Any updates please Niki mou?
Webbo said he could see the billowing smoke this morning - all he could fathom was that it seemed to be over towards the Larnaca area!

Bill, you are not affected by this are you?

Bubbles x 8)

Nothing yet. It's on the east side of Limassol, not near Larnaca. Up the Parekklisia/Pyrgos road.

The fire department says we should be ok.

Niki mou, I did not realise it was so close to you
Hope all ok with you!

So glad to hear that you are all ok. I cannot see any smoke today, but I do hope that everyone will be extra vigilant in the forthcoming months.

I invite you all to make comment as to whether you see any merit or potential for the utilisation of CL415s as a possible fire fighting tool.

Vigilance and education. Picnickers leaving glass bottles behind should pay the price.
