I have just about made my choice , I was thinking of London first then thought Melbourne was better since I don't want to be of any trouble to any of my relatives there. God help me !

I forgot to mention that we have saltwater crocodiles in our estuaries and rivers and they even roam the streets. Have you seen the movie "Crocodile Dundee"? This is what Australia is like.

You can not swim in the ocean because of Great White Sharks. Have you seen the movie "Jaws"? And what about the Box Jellyfish? If you get stung by one of them, you would wish to be taken by a Great White to put you out of your misery.

We also have dingos (wild dogs) that feed on our babies.

Our beds are surrounded with mosquito nets to protect us from Ross River and Malaria Virus carrying mosquitos.

A truelly inhospitable country.

It seems to have helped Cyprus with " Head Marxist" Mr X. Why do you ask Get Real? What would Dr. GR prescribe?

It’s “unkie” thank you. Unkie GR says that a university is like a sausage factory where you put the raw meat at one end and get the packaged sausages coming out the other!

So the idea is to go through the factory and be subjected to various functions and procedures so that you may emerge as a delicious packaged sausage at the other end, otherwise known as a QUALIFIED YOUNG MAN, so that you may be accepted by a potential employer, to whom you will offer your services in return for an income.

If the concept is very simple, why are you trying to make your life difficult? Why would anyone want to waste their youth studying the failed concepts of a couple of weirdos :? (and those of many more), when you could just BREEZE through a modern business admin/management course whilst in the lovely company of gorgeous young potential secretaries and admin girls… 8)

Just go kick some butt Umit and have fun while doing so! :P

So you are not going to believe me if I tell you that I have just returned from sweeping the Kangaroo droppings from my front porch after I had to hold a King Brown Snake at bay with a stick so that my wife can hang the washing?

Dam it. Our cover is broken.

Now seriously Umit. Australia may be a bit more expensive than before, but the standards in Education and living are very high. It is probably much better or easier than in Europe and the country has an abundance in opportunities. We currently have a booming economy due to the mining boom and the resources demand from China and India. The Australian economy is also very resilient to overseas financial markets crisis and will only slightly be effected by the downturn in the US economy.

It would be very easy for you to find part time and casual employment and since you are an Australian citizen, you would be entitled to the Austudy allowance and you could defer your HECS (uni fees) which will need to be paid when you gain full time employment.

If you study something which can lead you towards a career in the mining or booming defence industries, then you will not want to go back to Europe except for holidays, and the salary packages offered would mean you would be able to afford to do so every year.

On the down side, Australia is a long way from Europe so it would not be easy to re-unite with your family. Also, Australian society is not as open and friendly as Cypriot society, so if you do not have many friends it can get lonely. Rents are also high, but many uni students share their accommodation and as a result they reduce their costs significantly.

* Rent rates in North Melbourne seem to be around 200 AUD a week for a tiny one bedroom flat. Would a student working part-time be able to afford it?

*What is the average per hour wage for part time student type jobs? How hard is it finding work?

*I couldn't find any info about gov. student benefits , I know that there are some sorts insentives.

*

I hae a colleague who has some experience about this ragio (Melbourne)
He says that average rent of house would be around 280 however it seems easy to find a paret time work if you like just sent your questions to [email protected]

Umit07,

I don't understand how you can avoid your military service if you move to Australia to study, but you will not be able to avoid it, if you studied in the RoC and went home at nights or weekends to the north, depending where the University is that has the courses you want.

Everything is getting expensive all over the world Humanist. The onlt thing that can be considered cheap in the North of Cyprus is Rent. Petrol is 2.3 AUD and food is not that cheap either.

As an estimate how much do you think a student would need to get by , excluding rent.

Hi Umit

and rent in trnc ought to be cheap. Remember the poor refugee from Morphou gets jack shit for someone occupying their home. (just a bit of true dig mate - take no note).

To answer your question you can do it cheaply depending on what you consume.

I don't eat red meat mostly fruit and veg and fish. A Baramandi about 250grms will set you back $7. I also eat organic fruit and vegetables and my weekly bill is about $80. That buys legumes, tofu, pasta, fetta and various greens. To manage my finances I have a credit card in which I deposit $250 a fortnight and that covers my gas, electricity, private health insurance, mobile phone, landline and internet and have direct debit.

I have a good life, thank God.

Hi Humanist

80 bucks a week on food is very cheap . I must admit that I am used to grandma food but it will have to be something I will do without. As far as I see it rent is gonna be my main concern. How much an hour (net) would you earn workıng at a casual student job? I think it's around 15-20 bucks an hour.
