I have just about made my choice , I was thinking of London first then thought Melbourne was better since I don't want to be of any trouble to any of my relatives there. God help me !
I forgot to mention that we have saltwater crocodiles in our estuaries and rivers and they even roam the streets. Have you seen the movie "Crocodile Dundee"? This is what Australia is like.
You can not swim in the ocean because of Great White Sharks. Have you seen the movie "Jaws"? And what about the Box Jellyfish? If you get stung by one of them, you would wish to be taken by a Great White to put you out of your misery.
We also have dingos (wild dogs) that feed on our babies.
Our beds are surrounded with mosquito nets to protect us from Ross River and Malaria Virus carrying mosquitos.
A truelly inhospitable country.
Paphtis , I have lived in Melbourne longer than I have in Cyprus! Now be useful please
So you are not going to believe me if I tell you that I have just returned from sweeping the Kangaroo droppings from my front porch after I had to hold a King Brown Snake at bay with a stick so that my wife can hang the washing?
Dam it. Our cover is broken.
Now seriously Umit. Australia may be a bit more expensive than before, but the standards in Education and living are very high. It is probably much better or easier than in Europe and the country has an abundance in opportunities. We currently have a booming economy due to the mining boom and the resources demand from China and India. The Australian economy is also very resilient to overseas financial markets crisis and will only slightly be effected by the downturn in the US economy.
It would be very easy for you to find part time and casual employment and since you are an Australian citizen, you would be entitled to the Austudy allowance and you could defer your HECS (uni fees) which will need to be paid when you gain full time employment.
If you study something which can lead you towards a career in the mining or booming defence industries, then you will not want to go back to Europe except for holidays, and the salary packages offered would mean you would be able to afford to do so every year.
On the down side, Australia is a long way from Europe so it would not be easy to re-unite with your family. Also, Australian society is not as open and friendly as Cypriot society, so if you do not have many friends it can get lonely. Rents are also high, but many uni students share their accommodation and as a result they reduce their costs significantly.
