Civilising Cypriots with Cricket! ....

Postby Oracle » Sat Jun 14, 2008 7:27 pm

I'm not going to pretend I understand LBW or other Cricket rules .... I just miss the sight of those portly athletes in their whites, the sound of leather on willow, crustless cucumber sarnies, Battenburg cake and other metaphors and Double Entendres ...

"The Bowler's Holding, the Batsman's Willey" ....

"What a magnificent shot! No, he's out." - Tony Greig.

Why did the Brits not popularise Cricket in Cyprus ?

What a waste of space Golf courses are

Yes I propose that Cricket can civilise the Cypriot ..... 8)

Where's it being played? :?

The British legacy of cricket is alive and well in Cyprus; there are ten teams, five cricket grounds and a National team which has toured in Europe.

Most players are from the Asian sub continent.

Went to see one of the teams play against a visiting English team last year; very enjoyable.

That does remind me that I saw a group of Sri Lankan chaps playing cricket on a bit of green in Rhodes (Town) a couple of years ago. Brought a smile to my face.

Hooray for the Sri Lankans popularising Cricket in a roundabout way ... must say I forgot about their strong association

There are two Sri Lankan teams, a mixed Indian/Pakistani team :-) an ex-pat team, an Amdocs team, a couple of British military teams and quite a few Repatriate Cypriots from SA, Australia etc.

lana PS Don't tell Feisty, she will only want to come along and watch!
