Internet in rented property

Postby chrisnay » Sat Jun 14, 2008 8:52 am

HI,

I will shortly be renting a property for 4 months and would like internet access. I know I can look for hotspots, but want internet where I am staying, is there a way I can get this without paying for istallation charges, or buying dishes etc. etc.

Hi Chris,

If you are renting in the Paphos/Polis area, we do a short-term rental service via the wireless system. You just rent the equipment plus pay 4 months subscription.

If you are in the main town area and not out in the middle of nowhere I would imagine there are plenty of unsecured internet wireless transmissions you can use .

A usb high gain wireless adapter ( such as Hawking ) would enhance any signals close to you and could save you the expense of getting a temporary connection installed.

Bill is correct, there are usually lots of unsecured connections available. Worth trying first!

Even if you are in the middle of nowhere I can do a sat bb connection on a temp basis if no wireless available.

Bill & Holitec, if I left my car open would it be ok for you to come along & take it? The principal is exactly the same as stealing unsecured wireless bandwidth. It is illegal.

If you were daft enough to leave your car open and the keys in whilst in a town area you really and quite honestly deserve to have it stolen.

There is no reason why the person with a unsecured wireless connection can't lock it to prevent unauthorised access ~ personally I'm not happy about using someone else's connection as it's leaving my computer wide open .

There are lots of locations advertising free internet wireless connection and they are often available over quite a distance so I'll amend my original post and advise Chrisnay to try and see if he can receive one of those free wireless connections before going to the expense of a temporary connection ~ just to make you happy.

You can get dial-up without any installations or any equipment. Primetel gives free dialup but you still need to pay for the time you use it. Something like 35cents per hour if I remember correctly. If you use dialup with somehting like onspeed it could be OK if you use internet no more than 2 hours every day and you don't make any big downloads.

Thanks for the info, but Holitec, how much would it cost me to have your service, and what speeds can you offer.

Thanks

Hi Chris,

The installation of either the sat bb or wireless would be €170 (to cover putting up/removing after the 4 months). The wireless subscription for 512/256 is €25 pm, or 1.5/256 €42.75 - the sat bb is a bit higher at €89 for the Hughes Home 500 - 512/128 (but you tend to get about 380/90)

Or you can use any of our free hotspots at no charge.

Regards
