These herrings are not a typical Swedish thing but rather a typical thing of the northern Swedish parts. Especially at the northern Baltic coastline.
Since it smells like rotten fish I find it hard to believe that it would sell well. So I think IKEA will stick with "Swedish meatballs" for a while. I reckon smoked reindeer (poor Rudolph) would sell much better. It's very tasty. Anyone who likes hiromeri would like smoked reindeer even though no wine is involved in the preparation process.
However, east asians, the Japanese in particular, seem to like surströmming. And the French have been successful in promoting smelly cheese worldwide. So it's not impossible that IKEA will promote smelly herrings worldwide sometime in the future.
