Hello, long time no speak. Anyway as for your question.
The European Union for Cyprus on the whole is a good thing. Cyprus law is fairly slack, and riddled with internal corruption. Not to mention propaganda from both sides of the border. The European Union has proved to eliminate wars between other European members, which helps in our situation.
It will give chance for Cyprus to progress to a European standard, increasing such things as Internet connections and eliminating any forms of monopoly. Prior to Cyprus accession in the EU, CYTA had major monopoly over the telephony market, it has since been hit very hard by PrimeTel and other providers as now it is forced to allow other companies in the market. This is a good thing, since now PrimeTel and OteNet kick CYTA ass in price, speed and reliability.
This form of globalization brings prices down for the consumer, and also increases consumer quality as there is more competition. It also means that consumers will have more say.
You might feel that smaller companies are loosing their identity, but if they were truly good, people would continue going there. The down side is many small companies fail to adhere to legal practices. For instance you would see many graphics designers or programmers using unlicensed products. Since they fail to follow such basic law principles they most certainly do not deserve to compete for the bigger fish.
I have seen a dramatic change over the past five years and I feel it has now progressed to a decent standard. Places like Nicosia resemble where I was in England. However, after going to IKEA and being fed some bureaucracy on ordering items, I found myself lucky that Cyprus is like it is.
I love Cyprus, the European Union will make Cyprus more European, but on the whole, it will still be good old Cyprus. Who knows, we might actually join with the TC and become one again, which is becoming an ever growing possibility with the European Union.
PS: Most GC like TC's, ignore most of the posts here because they are lying. Some GC are not fond of Turks, but this negative feeling are going away, since many Cypriots have been abroad and actually met them. Guess what TC call Greek-Coffee?... lol
It will also give a chance for many British/American/Australian/New Zealand/South African etc. Cypriots to come to Cyprus and do similar business through the same ethics as they did outside Cyprus. This helps me tremendously, as I mostly lived in the UK.
The European Union is a union which tries to do good things. For instance, it feeds money in poorer areas, giving tax exceptions to deprived or re generational areas. It also cares about the environment. This is a good union, and we a privileged to be in it.
BEST THING FOR EUROPE: Grow the way it has
WORSE THING FOR CYPRUS: To remain as it is
