Reports: Talat snubs UN dinner with Cyprus President

By Alethea Reynolds 08.JUN.08
The fallout over a memorandum signed between the government and Britain could lead to the cancellation of a social dinner organised by UN official Lynn Pascoe.

CyBC state radio reported that the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat has refused to attend the dinner, which was billed as a "social gathering" of Talat, President Christofias and Lynn Pascoe and was to take place on June 17.

According to BRT in northern Cyprus, Mr Talat has said the memorandum would harm the common views reached between him and President Christofias.

Mr Talat strongly condemned Britain, saying this kind of an approach would not help find a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.

He also added that the Turkish Cypriot Side is against Britain’s recent attitude towards the Cyprus problem.

On Thursday, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and President Demetris Christofias signed a memorandum of understanding which made a reference to "a federation based on a bi-communal and bi-zonal structure".

The fact that the RoC president made a decision to drop 11 cases present at the ECHR got no thanks and something that concerns the RoC and its people and has nothing to do with Turkey upsets the pipsquit.

I think a mistake has been made by the northern community in their choice of Mr T as spokesperson. He's out of his depth.

My northern brothers and sisters, please, please enlarge the door to the negotiation room and bring back a heavyweight Cypriot, Mr Donktosh Snr.
