Air rifle laws

Postby mike-d » Wed Jun 04, 2008 10:55 pm

Good evening all,

I am relatively new to this forum and am also going to be moving out to Cyprus in the middle of July from the UK.

The property that I own in Cyprus has become somewhat of a magnet for pigeons and I wanted to find a permanent way to get rid of them!

Can anyone tell me if air rifles / air pistols (that fire pellets - not bullets!) can be bought in Cyprus, and whether a license is required.

I know that many Cypriots own a shotgun for hunting (and shooting any road sign that they may pass on the way!) but am not sure whether air rifles are permitted.

Any advice on this subject would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike.

Not too sure about the air rifles, I think you will need more of a license to shoot the pigeons !!

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your postings.

Yes you can bring /buy air rifles in Cyprus .

You are restricted to .177 only ~~ .22 is definitely out of the question by law BUT as this is Cyprus it seems they are available in most gun shops .

There seems to be no actual power limit as long as it's a .177.

I believe a licence is required and is available from your local friendly police station.

Mike Shooting is not the answer... unless you were just firing to scare the pigeons away!

I am sure once you have taken up continuous residency they will find alternative accommodation. :D

Give them a chance!

I dont know about importing air rifle to Cyprus but Bill is spot on with other advise,

If you purchase in Cyprus the seller will sort out all the paperwork but wont let you take the rifle away until the licence is approved

If you place a stuffed bird of prey in a prominent position on your rooftop the pigeons will move on for good including all other birds unfortunately.

That doesn’t work, nor do any of the many other remedies that will undoubtedly be suggested on this thread, nor will they move out when you move in…

Mike is right; the only way to rid yourself of these disgusting vermin is to shoot them.

Thanks all for your advice,

Cyprusgrump, I think you are right - I have been renting the property out for the past 12 months and the tenants told me that they had constant problems with pigeons and pigeon droppings too!

Will check out a .177 and the appropriate license when I get there.

Thanks all,
Mike.

There a special farmaka to spray on the roofs now... ask pest control, some deal with pigeons.
