We should negotiate what suits the RoC, otherwise the EU will take affirmative action to end this hostage situation in its territory.
Hi Oracle, thank you for your analysis - very thorough as usual - even if our views do clash from time to time.
May I just say a few words on what you said in your last post (the area in quotes above in particular).
This is how the EU Works Oracle - I know them too well:
Like you, I too strongly believe in the EU as a means of solving all nationalistic based issues. However, I do not believe that the EU is presently, both well equipped or even capable of single-handily "pushing" Turkey, Greece, Cyprus or even Britain for that matter toward a Cyprus solution based on the values we'd prefer. They do not simply, either care as much, or have a higher immediate purpose. I also believe that the EU themselves are not entirely ready to completely incorporate a USA style Federal-Super Union; with the ultimate dissolution of all inter-state member governments in replace of a unified central European Union Federal government.
WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH CYPRUS, you may ask? Well!
Evidence:
In short, the evidence that the EUROPEAN UNION would rather just prefer to wash-away with the entire Cyprus issue with a simple "Two State" formula is pretty much overwhelming, and probably not surprising too. Accordingly, the EU are not necessarily concerned about what form of a solution is finally accepted by the people of the island of Cyprus, as they know that the entire EU Club will ultimately one day be represented, only, by one entire super-state Government. Thus, they are only concerned with a "Resolution" of the problem, even if it ends in partition! This, considering their ultimate outlook, will make no difference to their final aim of finally achieving their Super-State idea with no Country borders, but only non-governmental "Federal" counties or zones; like the county of Germany, or the Country of Cyprus! And, finally, if the EU were interested in the Cyprus process at this short term level (!), then they would surely have taken on the entire Cyprus resolution process and could have logically advised the UN to take a back seat after many, many years of an unsuccessful processes!
Therefore, it's the SHORT-TERM solution they are really aiming for, isn't it Oracle?
Also, as part of this body of evidence, one may just look at the overall development of the EU; from its EEC status as an economic Community only through to what it has become today as a strong Political Union. This is why I am adamant that if we fail to make a compromise on the Cyprus peace process this time, and a "No" is confirmed by either side and not just by ours, you can be sure to expect the EU to suddenly (even by some kind of initial stealth mode like it did with Kosovo against Greek and Russian wishes, and even Montenegro again Serbian wishes!) make some very swift maneuvers. And obviously, this is not the Short-Term solution that we will desire.
Regard,
Andros
