TURKISH CYPRIOTS NOT ALLOWED TO VOTE IN RoC

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby brother » Tue May 03, 2005 5:27 pm

VP i can understand your opinion on partition of the island and say that is your opinion but your stance on your childrens marriage prospects and different race marriages....welll....stinks of racism, its like caveman thinking and i do take offence.
I have half gc and half tc first cousins and they speak all three languages and they see them selves as cypriots, they can happily fit into three societies and their parents gave them the choice of religion they would practice or to be atheist and when they choose to marry they will yet again be free to choose whom they want but my point is the world is growing smaller and different race marriages do work, its only people like you who make it hard for mixed marriage couples with your sneering and constant harrasment of them and their choices.

erolz as I can appreciate your viewpoint and I do not in anyway want to sound condensending, its your life your decision. My arguement is that your children and their children after them will have nothing to do with Cypriotism, in time and several generations later no one will even remember anything about Cypriotism and that their great great great...... grandfather was a Turkish Cypriot.

I dont want this for my family.

If my (fictional) 1/4 Cypriot kids married a on cypriot their children would be 1/8 cypriot and if they married a cypriot they would be 3/4 cyptiot (if my maths is working). What they would all be is deserving of my love as a father and grandfather irresepctive of who they married or how cvypriot they were

As is your right to want as you like - as long as you do not force your wants on others against their will (either your own children or not) then we have no 'argument' :)

erolz no one disbutes the love for ones child but I think you now understand my viewpoint. Although I would not force anyone to do anything against their wishes, my chlidren are level headed enough to understand that a mixed marriage would be a disappointment to our family but a marriage to a GC would be a tragedy and totally unacceptable. Im glad to see that they value their culture and have an internal instinct to marry a TC.

We talked about this a lot but it still bothers me when I read such remarks from you. Ok, let's say I marry to an American, does that mean that I don't value my culture? I don't think so. Actually, I believe I value my culture more than others, I'm spreading my culture to other cultures! You can't deny that my future fictitious American wife will absord some Cypriotness from me.

The reason why so many TCs oppose to mixed marriages is because a mixed marriage is not something easy. Both sides (husband and wife and families) have to compromise and both sides need to get out of their comfort zone in order to make this work. In the end, I think it's worthed because the fruit of the marriage (children) have a wider culture acquired from both parents and they have a wider view of the world as a result of this. I'm not even mentioning the language advantage.

Erol is a prime example of this. He's half TC but he's more concerend about TC society and culture than many TCs I know. Anyway, I know you're not going to change your mind but at least don't say people don't value their culture when they marry to a foreigner.

I was referring to my children and the pleasure they give me when they embrace their own culture and people.

Depends on the individual foreigner you marry, she may not even want to associate with your culture..if you try to make her absorb it then you have problems.

How many know both languages well??? im not talking about a few words, the mixed marriage children I know can only speak English.

Enough said on this subject I think :D
