POLITICAL EQUALITY IS CRUCIAL FOR TURKISH CYPRIOTS

PRESIDENT TALAT: POLITICAL EQUALITY IS CRUCIAL FOR TURKISH CYPRIOTS IN ANY PARTNERSHIP STATE TO BE FORMED IN CYPRUS.

The TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat has said that political equality of the two sides is crucial for the Turkish Cypriot People in a new partnership state to be formed in Cyprus.
In an exclusive interview with Euronews, President Talat explained that it was not numerical equality, but the effective participation in the decision making process which the Turkish Cypriot Side is demanding.

Asked what were the main obstacles in the way of a political settlement, the President said the Greek Cypriot Orthodox church and the former Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos whose party is still a coalition partner in the current Greek Cypriot government, posed as the major obstacles in the way of a settlement.
“The problem with the Greek Cypriot Side is the rejectionist forces position” he said.
Touching upon the property issue, the President said there were three options under which the property issue could be solved,

compensation, exchange or restitution, all of which would be included in the provisions of any future agreement.

Asked to comment on whether or not Turkey was using the Cyprus Problem as a bargaining chip in its negotiations with the European Union, Mr Talat said that contrary to this view, it was actually some members of the EU, particularly the Greek Cypriot Administration which were using the issue against Ankara.

On the presence of Turkish troops on the island, the President said that 650 Turkish and 950 Greek soldiers will remain on the island according to the 1960 treaties of guarantee and alliance.

“The problem is this: If you go on the streets and ask Turkish Cypriots whether they want Turkish troops to stay or not, 95% of them will approve their presence.
Why? Because of mistrust, So the presence of Turkish troops is very crucial and very important for Turkish Cypriots, even if this is a symbolic number”
he added.

He noted that the Turkish Cypriot Side had the full support of Turkey.

"political equality" is yet another term which is intentionally distorted by the Turks to mean the opposide of what this term actually refers to.

Do a search in Google for political equality, and the first result is a paper from the Harvard University which says:

By political equality we refer to the extent to which citizens have an equal voice over governmental decisions. One of the bedrock principles in a democracy is the equal consideration of the preferences and interests of all citizens. This is expressed in such principles as one-person/one-vote, equality before the law, and equal rights of free speech.
http://www.hks.harvard.edu/inequality/S ... /Verba.pdf

This is what Political Equality truly means. It means when the citizens of a country are equal to each other, in a one person/ one vote democracy, without racist or other kinds of discriminations.

What the Turks demand, has nothing to do with the true meaning of political equality, but it is actually exactly the opposide.

What they want is to divide the Cypriot people according to their race, and then the citizens that belong to one ethnic group to have 4.5 more voting power than the citizens that belong to another ethnic group.

So when Talat is saying "it was not numerical equality, but the effective participation in the decision making process which the Turkish Cypriot Side is demanding." this can be translated as: "We will not kill 600.000 Greek Cypriots in order to be numerically equal with them, but each TC should have the same say as that of 4-5 GCs."

That is a racist inequality among the citizens of this country. "Effective Participation" would mean for each TC to have the same say as each GC, and the goverment positions to be proportionately shared among the Cypriot citizens all the ethnic groups.

Unfortunately the Turks distort this term in the same way they distort many other terms, like "unification" and "solution".

They want to officially divide the land, the people and everything else, by means of ethnic cleansing and human rights violations, and they call this "unification" because they will make us the "favor" to have some loose association with us which will benefit only them by brining them into the EU and removing from Cyprus its international voice so we will not be able to block Turkey from EU or anywhere else.

And then they call such arrangement a "solution"!! A "solution" of what? Our problem is that the Turks have ethnically cleansed us from our lands and are now illegally ruling our lands. A solution to this problem means giving back to us our lands, and allowing Cyprus to be free and democratic without foreign occupation troops.

Halil,

I watched that interview on EUronews. I can't blieve the source of your article cut out the most important part of that interview.

He was asked what he plans to do with the settlers and he responded by say that there are no settlers anymore. "These people have lived here for 20-30 years, they have been cypriotified now."

So....just like you take a swiss emental cheese when you really only wanted a halloumi...just leave it in your fridge in cyprus for 20-30 years and it'll become halloumified.

I hope he sprayed and sterilised them after he cypriotised them.

DT,
you were so quick mate , settlers issuie is another matter . İt is very easy to solve it .

Soyer says to Christofias ''Don't waste this historic opportunity ''
we were unable to esolve the Cyprus problem because of the intransigent attitude of former GC leader and the consequent rejection of same fate as Tasos if he causes a breakdown in the process and fails to make use of this historic opportuninity.
absence of a solution to the Cyprus problem will not only create serious problem for 2 communities but also for Greece,Turkey andthe rest of the middleast and he repeated that the TC side was eager to arrive at early solution to yhe Cyprus Problem.

Soyer also says: The Turkish Cypriott vpeople want to self adminstration in their area.We are poenly admitting yhis. The Cyprus problem should be resolved on a basis of a bi-zonal ,bi-communual partnership state made up two consituent states.

Turkey's guartees are not subject to discussion. The objections against the 1960 treaties of guarantees and alliance are meaningless and withouth foundation such claims and arguments have never been taken seriously.

How will the issue of property be solved ?
the matter of of property is part of a comprehensive settlement but it doesn't only affect the GC'S but also the TC's too .

Halil, why do you think the settlers are very easy to solve? It is very important in order for us to approve a solution that they be repatriated.
