Agreed...So when are you going to let go of GR's waist???? :)

Is it so hard for you to believe that there may be more than one Cypriot who puts Cyprus first .....

Oracle,

More than one yes, but not more than a big number (10?).

To put Markides in a personal context, I am Nikitas of the X family, from Famagusta, I am a Greek Cypriot, and Greek. OK but can Messrs Markides and Asmussen say when we GCs started calling mainlanders Kalamaras and why, and can they find a reason for the deep mistrust of them that GCs displayed since way back before the 50s?

Why is there a feeling of pity for families whose children marry mainlanders?

Here is a short account of a meeting in Larnaca in 1980 which shows the same holds true for TCs.

"My daughter, unfortunately married a Kalamaras and now lives in Kyrenia" says a TC who stayed behind in Larnaca after 1974.

"Are you kidding me! Your daughter married a Kalamaras and lives in Kyrenia!!!"

"Yes! And you know what? Our Kalamarades are worse than yours!"

I would love to hear opinions by Markides and Asmussen on the above dialogue.

To understand the uniqueness of Cypriots without the political clutter refer to the differences between mainland Italians and Sicilians. Or between French and Corsicans. Big Mediterranean islands develope their own unique cultures regardless of national affiliation.

What if you leave a piece of your heart in CY every time you depart for "home"?

I heard a civil servant shout out to another Official about an enquirer at the town civil office and he used this term to refer to this person as a means of identification ....

A Cypriot can only be what ever GR or Oracle defines it as

A better question would be to define a GC and TC independently then just for the fun of it compare any similarities, if any ;)

"Cypriotness" has many diverse and colourful characteristics influenced by many civilisations from the Romans, Hellenes, Ottomans, British, etc. A combination and acceptance of these cultures which moulds "us" is what I suppose some would call a "Cypriot".

In another generation or two you will be able to accept the "settlers" as Cypriots too and love them like one of your own

My favorite definition of a “Cypriot” is that of Miltiades who thinks that a “Cypriot” is someone who left permanently for England in 1947, came back to Cyprus for the first time about 20 years later when he saved up enough money, and then repeated the holiday every few years thereafter, each time arriving in his white socks and sandals, carrying a worn out black little wallet with enough pound sterling to buy 5 crates of KEO, and walking around like a complete nincompoop in a pair of shorts while its 25 degrees, looking up high at the now taller skyline and wondering what changed, while at the same time reminiscing about the good old days when he was ten in some little village and got clapped around the ear-hole for climbing up a tree…
