Is it to do with their genes ... ?

Are you capable of understanding why, if the answer was "no" ? .... are you wishing it were "yes" ? Does it make any difference? The RoC does not demand a gene i.d. test! ... and I know of no one who knows their gene sequences apart from Craig Venter ... and he may just prove to be an ass ....

By far the most accurate description of a Cypriot .
Foreigners , motherland bullshitters take note or better take a run and jump, your motherlands are awaiting with their arms stretched out to meet you.

I will disagree with both of you on this one.
Inhabitant is defined as "One that inhabits a place, especially as a permanent resident"
There are plenty of "permanent residents" on both sides which fit into the above but, still i wouldn't accept them as Cypriots.

Cyprus is an island. Without defining dweller except for an attachment to its Heritance or its relics, is a Cypriot.

...beyond being Turkish or Greek or Maronite (etc.) there is gratitude and respect for having roots, here.
Therefore in the diaspora there are some who have this pride without having stepped foot on the island.

I like RW's definition as it incorporates the Diaspora ( of all the Island's communities ) and makes reference to roots and as GG says home is where the heart is.

Ive solved this little enigma and have a definitive answer, with PROOF :!:

After extensive, exhaustive investigation I found this link (a few threads up from this one) http://www.greece.org/cyprus/Chronology.htm
Check the second entry:
"c.7500 BC The first known domesticated cat in the world is buried at the Neolithic village of Shillourokambos in Cyprus 4000 years before similar burials are known in Egypt."

This proves that cats were burying their relatives in olden days. Therefore cats were the first settlers on the island, therefore a true Cypriot is...a Cat!!

Job done, no need for Columbo or CSI here people :D
