TALAT AND CHRISTOFIAS REAFFIRM COMMITTMENT FOR A FEDERAL PARTNERSHIP IN CYPRUS

The two leaders in Cyprus have reaffirmed their committment towards the establishment of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federal partnership in Cyprus.

The joint statement was read out by the UN Chief of Mission in Cyprus Taye-Brook Zerihoun at the end of the meeting between President Mehmet Ali Talat and the Greek Cypriot Leader Demetris Christofias which took place at Zerihoun’s residence in the UN-controlled buffer zone today.

The two leaders have decided to meet again in the second half of June to make a new assessment.

Talat and Christofias met to evaluate the work being carried out by working groups and technical committees- established to prepare the ground for fully-fledged negotiations.

Senior aides of the two leaders Ozdil Nami and Yorgos Iakovu were also present at the meeting.

Reading out the joint statement at the end of the meeting, Zerihoun said the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment for a federation on the basis of the political equality of the two sides, as defined by the UN Security Council resolutions.

UN Chief of Mission stressed the federal government will be consisting of Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot constituent states and will have a single international personality, adding that the two constituent states will be of equal status.

Mr Zerihoun went on to say Nami and Yakovu will come together within 15 days to consider civilian and military confidence-building measures.

Representatives will also pursue the opening of Limlidis-Yesilirmak gate as well as other crossing points.

Nothing has been decided other than to keep looking and to have another meeting ....

The EU will override Christofias if he dares give the Turks any say in Europe by this backdoor method .... do not get your hopes up ...

First the kiss and then the kick ....

After more than three hours of U.N.-hosted talks at Friday, Talat and Christofias admitted that there were problems that still needed ironing out although they agreed to meet again next month to reassess progress.

"The leaders decided to come together again in the second half of June to make a new assessment," said U.N. chief of mission Taye-Brook Zerihoun, reading from a joint statement after the talks he hosted at the U.N. compound. "The leaders today had genuine and fruitful discussions and reviewed the results achieved pursuant to the March 21 agreement" to set up a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation, he said.

The statement said that Talat and Christofias had "instructed their representatives to examine within 15 days the results of the technical committees. "The representatives will consider civilian and military confidence-building measures," including opening new crossing points between the two sides of the divided island.

Friday's talks were aimed at paving the way for the formal launch of peace negotiations scheduled to start on June 21. But when asked by reporters when the formal talks will start, Talat said, "This is a difficult question, actually. We are going to make an assessment in the second half of June when we come together. "You know we have different views on this issue. We continue to have views on this matter," Talat added.

Christofias also spoke of problems but said there was a will to overcome them. "We decided we are going to handle those problems and push representatives of both communities in the working groups to work intensively to overcome these problems," he said.
