Be warned bastard electric company

Postby tony harte » Tue May 20, 2008 6:17 am

We were over last dec/jan for 2 weeks just me the wife and her 17yr old son.

The bank paid our electric for the period 9th sept 9th nov.
And later paid our electric for period 09th nov-09th jan which took in the two weeks we were there in dec/jan.

My sister went to stay at our appartment on 5th May which has been vacant since 06th Jan only to find the electric had been cut off for non payment of 118 euro not paid by the bank for the period 09 jan- 09 march 2008.

We left 120 euro in our cyprus account to pay the water bill 10 euro a month and the electric 2 euro a month.

How can a vacant appartment use 118 euro in 2 months when the electric is switched off?? from the fuse box and the meter??

Ok so lets assume we cocked up and the electric company is right (which is a mile from the truth)

My sister goes into the electric company in paralimni with the cash to pay the bill on my behalf??????????
And they refuse to take the money and refuse to re-connect untill I in person go over and sign a new contract and standing order.

Neither my bank(bank of cyprus) or the electric company who both know i am non- resident and have my uk address, home phone no, mobile phone no, fax no, email address, took the time to contact me and say "we have a problem" "need some dosh from you"...no problem could have done it over the net or phone!!

What is the matter with these cyprus tossers, common sence where are you??????????

O and as for where the electric went???????
Its common for the workmen on new build sites to tap into vacant appartment electric supply....try to prove it ....no chance

My advise is when you are going home, switch of form the fuse box, the meter and remove the main fuse from the meter and take a meter reading on your camera and email it to the bastards.

I am so pissed off...we buy a holiday home from them..we respect their way of life and culture..we spend money in their country....we try intergrate with their country and people.....what do we get back????
nothing other then rip us off as a pay back for our grandfathers rule on their country.

I am starting to feel i would have been treated better if I had bought from the Turks in the north.

I had a similar problem with British Gas.

They wanted money for the 3 months after we had moved out of the house moving to Cyprus and despite at least 8 phone calls each time them not being able to find the account (because we had closed it!) the red bills still kept coming.

In the end they were threatening legal action and a black mark on our credit rating until we finally spoke to someone who managed to sort it out. God knows what the phone bills were after going through "press 1" for ..... etc each time.

It's not just Cyprus!

The electricity company AHK, takes a reading only every other month and estimates the previous month to that based on past history. Any discrepancy is then deducted from the next reading. This is done to save 50% of their on-site labour costs.

We too had problems with our dual electric/gas supply back home.

They had estimated the readings and wanted hundreds of pounds even though we knew we had not used it (empty property at the time)

It took us months, many threatening letters from them and even more telephone calls (alas you never get the same person twice!) from us to get it sorted - and finally we receive a substantial refund! AMAZING!

I wrote and apologised to the people who had bought our house as I believe that they too had problems connecting their fuel supply owing to our suppliers' incompetency!

Also had problems with water supply over here - but that is another story!

Hope you get it sorted and do not suffer anymore hassle!

It's a bit irresponsible to immediately blame someone else for what could be your blunder .....

Tony Harte: .... it's quite common for people to go off and leave something on which still uses up electricity .... and as you said you did not switch off at the mains.

I find it quite strange that the electric company have disconnected you so soon ~ usually it will happen only for large sums owing over a longish period.

I've also had the bank not pay one of my electric bills when I used my place as a holiday only home but the electric company didn't disconnect me even though it was well late.

Get real is correct with his post on every other reading being estimated except that he has shown the bills come every month when in actual fact they are every two months ~ this estimated reading doesn't happen everywhere as usually in the major towns they read the meter for every bill .

I would have thought you would have left a bit more than €120 in your bank account if only for emergencies .

Personally I've found the electric and water companies very decent to deal with .

Oracle.
If you took the time to read Tony's post properly you will see he states he DID switch the mains OFF. Before sticking your oar in and stirring the s*** again read posts properly and come down off your pedastal
Cheers Norman.
