Why do settlers flock to the North?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Why do settlers flock to the North?

Postby Nickp » Mon Apr 25, 2005 8:29 pm

Can some one give me insight as to why Turkish Settlers have been flocking to North Cyprus and continue to?

Current estimations is that the TC community is roughly 120,000 with Turkish settlers equalling that.

But why do they come to the North? What is the attraction? From what i've seen these people are quite poor. Im sure any major Turkish city or richer country would offer more opporunity than North Cyprus which has been left in limbo.

I can understand if they come to get free abandoned property but once there, what do they do economoically? How do TC's feel about having settlers that are equal in numbers to them.

I'm not racist, but if it was the other way round, if there was 600,000 Greeks from mainland Greece coming over i feel it would be eroding our distinct character. Especially if they started to outnumber us.

Any insight would greatly expand my understanding.

The answer to your question lies at what you consider a settler?

Do you consider every Kurd and/or Turk that comes from Turkey to work in north Cyprus (mainly on construction sites) as a settler? If you do then the population in north Cyprus is more than 300k where settlers are more than 150k.

If you consider them not as settler but only the ones which have been here for long years and given TRNC citizenship as settler then the population of north is around 220 k where settlers are around 60-70k.

TurkCyp, what is the percentage of TCs that emigrated from Cyprus after 1974?

The settlers that were given citizenships by naturalization and their Cyprus born children must not be confused with the mainland Turks who come to North Cyprus mainly to work at constructions and some other areas. 20.000 mainland university students and their families who stay in North as visitors also must not be confused with settlers who are naturalized citizens of "TRNC". Finally, the Turks from Turkey who come to North for touristic purposes also must not be confused with the settlers.

It is true that throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s thousands of settlers cam Cyprus, given properties, inhabited in North, applied for citizenship by naturalization and given the citizenship.

If the number of settlers who were given citizenship by naturalization have been some 30.000 thousands, most probably there wouldn't be much complaints about them. However it is said that there were 45.000 settlers that were given citizenship by naturalization. It is also said that there were some 11.000 settlers who are married to a TC. The rest is the descendants of naturalized settlers or children born from mixed marriages.

The rumours about more settlers coming to North is a big lie and propaganda that some political circles like to make on both sides of the Island. Some make these allegations in order to urge and worry people to keep the reunification spirit alive; some try to create impressions that Turkish side does not want a solution therefor keeps importing settlers from Turkey.

Under the last 10 years circumstances, it's impossible to accomodate more settlers in North because no empty properties have left to give them. The final phase of settlers came in 90s and settled down to old Nicosia when the TCs abandoned those old buildings and rent them to settlers with a least rental.

%95 of people who inhabits in old Nicosia comprise of mainland Turks. Though all of them were not given citizenship by naturalization. I guess, at least half of the inhabitants of old Nicosia comprise of legal and illegal workers from Turkey.

The biggest problem about the settlers is that; overwhelming majority of these settlers occupy properties belong to GCs. Though most of the descendants of settlers who inhabit in villages have built their own houses but the land they built their own houses on is either belongs to a GC or GC administration.

No need for a laugh of arragonce, these are estimations that are always published in news and media articles from various media.

By defining a settler i'm talking about mainland Turks who have now lived and settled in northern Cyprus, i.e. there not going back.

In other words, propaganda machinery of GCs. I told in this forum a while ago. Somebody in the GC side tells a lie for propagand apurposes, and after some passage this lie gots so bigger that even the creator start believing in it.

Ok then. after the clarification you now have your answer. Settlers are around 60-70k in the north. Then constitute around 1/3 of the north's population.

If you read the linked topics to the first answer you may get a deeper idea how we reach to these figures.

Take care,

p.s. Expression of "LOL" was not about arrogance. It was about laughing at something funny. Because this subject has been discussed in this forum so many times. if it sounded arrogant accept my apologies.

Turk Cyp...if the settlers equate for 1/3 of the population of N Cyprus...are you telling me all the estimations about mainland Turks outnumbering TC is false? What about if you add the amount of settlers witht the military presence...does that still equate to 1/3?

The argument that the number of Turkish settlers exceeds the number of T.Cs is a very simple Greek tale, which has been told for decades. How can they be so sure about the numbers, eventhough they have no control over the North? I mean, how could the Greek Cypriot officials conduct a census in north?

Question: How many do Greeks, Pontian Greeks, Foreign workers from parts of Asia, Russians etc. live in south Cyprus?

If you are going to compare settlers with non-Cypriots living the RoC the question you need to ask is:

How many How many do Greeks, Pontian Greeks, Foreign workers from parts of Asia, Russians etc. live in south Cyprus with full citizenship and political benefits (for example got to vote in the referendum last year)?

Now do you understand the difference amico?
