I should have asked my grandfather . He was the Moukhtar of Kato Anglissidhes. On 1572 printed maps from Venice it is spelt as Ellisides. A double Lambda. At some stage it became a double gamma. I am not sure which version came first. Perhaps the Venetians made an error.

But thanks for the info. I never saw the connection, so ecclesiastical. They only had one church, in which my father was invited to sing as he had a good voice. He went to the Greek school there as there were no Turkish ones. So he could sing liturgical songs. He says he enjoyed it and was popular with the ladies.

Getting close to something very Elliniko (ides ... ideas) ... But how about Allisides ... as in Chains ... :?

Interesting, but is there a missing 'link' some where?

Very simple. My ancestors adopted Cyprus as their home. Home Sweet Home. 2000 miles away.

Good map.. Is it a Kitchener Map.

The mixed village was Kato Anglissidhes. Pano Angl. was totally Greek. Come to think of it My father had an Inn right on the present motorway (which is next to the Upper village. Whats left after the motorway was built is mine with the orchards around it. Only a few Apricots and Mulberrys' left.

Thanks again

Yes it is the Kitchener map and the index clearly states that the christian villages had a cross after the name, moslem villages had a crescent and the mix villages did not have either......so i take it,Pano Anglasides had moslem villagers also back then.
