Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

I dont want to sound like I am prejudice against the Brits. They are generally very welcoming. However, I have experienced racism almost from the very first day I set foot in the UK (first Northern Ireland then England). Despite the fact that I am obviously a South African with a tan complexion, I got the whole '&%$3 paki' thing. Considering I was 7 years old at the time, and this was coming from adults, well, you can understand where I'm coming from here. One of the reasons I would like to move to a place is because, from, talking to and reading up on the culture I am certain I would be more accepted. While we are on the subject, how do Cypriots view South Africans? I also dont want have problems about having come from the UK. I know there is quite a stigma attached to the UK in alot of places around the world.

Considering that half the world cant wait to get to the UK is hard to see how there is STIGMA ATTACHED TO THE UK. To answer your question , the UK citizens are very welcome in Cyprus , bearing in mind that all Cypriots have some connection with the UKs' 300 thousand Cypriots .
As far as I,m concerned the only " stigma " associated with the UK is all the bloody foreigners who not only do not adapt but have the audacity to expect the natives to adapt to their culture !!

If someone is from Pakistan they are a Paki, simple. Birmingham, Manchester and Bradford is full of them. I am not racist but I have a few friends who are Indian and Jamacian but the Paki's are a different race. Not being able to put up Christmas lights in certain towns which say Merry Christmas and we have to change it to say "'Happy festive times or Happy Festivity" If they dont like it bugger off back home. Christmas and Christmas light has been a tradition in England for years and years, alot longer than those b******s.

I do not think that 'Paki' was a pejorative word in years gone by; it is similar to the use of the word 'Brit' to define someone from the British Isles; merely an abbreviation. However its context has changed and now is a word no longer accepted in 'normal' society.

Similarly, it now sounds more polite to describe someone as 'Jewish' as, in some sectors of society, to call someone a 'Jew' is meant as an insult.

Very narrow minded people Purdey. How can an Indian be a Paki? :?

One of my good friends is Indian and when he annoys me or if I want his attention I call him a Paki, he hates it, but at least it gets his attention. All meant as fun. He calls me fried egg and chips man or honky!!!

Oh dear, white boy got his boxers on the wrong way, grow up. Why are Paki's different white boy, is it because you do not like them.
With respect Lana, Pakistanis today, the youth use the word Paki as a badge of honour, but the older families remember when the name was shouted with distain and hatred.

That is all very well so long as you are friends and you are only joking between yourselves. You have to admit that 'Paki' can and is used as an insult in a racist way!

I have an Asian friend back home who calls herself a 'Blackie', something I would never do, but as she said as itis coming from her lips it is ok. I told her I disagree with her........................................ :?

At one time Simon, it was big happy country called India. Until a man with a big hat called Mountbatten thought it would be nice to partition it.

Your right, years ago Paki was used differently years ago than today. I am sick and tired off these Muslim boys bombing up place's, coming to our country and planning terror attacks and demand X, Y and Z from the government. I watched a program abit ago about a Muslim community in Birmingham and it was shocking. There was also the incident recently with the teacher in the Middle East somewhere and used the name Mohammed, the treatment she received was not acceptable. Can you imagine if they were treated the same in the UK?

What would happen?

I dislike the things they do and the things they believe in

Yeah, joking is ok. But if I was really pissed with him I wouldn't call him Paki.
